History is filled with surprises, not the least of which, was the fall of the Soviet Union in 1989.

But what about the 30 years following the fall of the Soviet Union? This period of history is still being written. The end of the Cold War is a natural stopping point, but also a natural starting point, an inflection point when one story ends and something new-something unpredictable from what happened before-begins. Nonetheless, events of today have also been profoundly shaped by the past several decades, and we must understand this recent history to understand today's world. Contemporary life is changing so rapidly that it can be breathtaking to take a step back and look at the cohesive "story" from 1990 to 2019, but this is precisely what America after the Cold War: The First Thirty Years offers. Since 1990, the United States has seen an amazing leap in productivity and creativity, and most Americans are living the most enriched lives ever. The same country that elected the first black president to office also witnessed protest movements against police brutality and a resurgence of white nationalism. The context and connections you will uncover throughout the 12 lectures of this course can help you to better understand the paradoxes that lie at the heart of modern American history.

At home and on the battlefield, the leaders of ancient Rome knew their world was filled with signs from the gods, messages they needed to obey if they wanted success. Yes, they developed a well-oiled political and military machine, but they never made big decisions or went to battle without their priests and diviners.

As the famous Roman historian Livy put it: "This city was established with auspices. Who does not know that in war or peace at home or on military campaign all our affairs are conducted with auspices?" What were these auspices so crucial to the affairs of an empire? Auspices-from the Latin, meaning "one who looks at birds"-were signs from the gods revealed in the patterns of bird flight, as interpreted by the augur, a priest.

When we think about the Roman Empire, we tend to visualize massive armies conquering and plundering the peoples of the Mediterranean world. In fact, many have attributed the empire's 1,000-year reign directly to their well-organized military might. But that's not what the Romans thought; Roman leaders consistently ascribed the foundation of their success directly to their superior skills in religious practices.

In The Pagan World: Ancient Religions before Christianity, you will meet the fascinating, polytheistic peoples of the ancient Mediterranean and beyond, their many gods and goddesses, and their public and private worship practices, as you come to better understand the foundational role religion played in their lives. Professor Hans-Friedrich Mueller, of Union College in Schenectady, New York, makes this ancient world come alive in 24 lectures brimming with captivating stories and intriguing personalities, as well as artifacts, illustrations, and detailed codes and descriptions from a treasure trove of original sources.

Fascinating Picture of Ancient Polytheistic Life

In the ancient Mediterranean world, religion was not separate from daily life. To the contrary, religion was daily life. These polytheists believed they had a strict contract with their deities: If they took care of their gods, their gods would take care of them. That meant following numerous rules and regulations that circumscribed almost all aspects of life both inside and outside the home. Consequently, their religion makes a wonderful lens through which to achieve a deeper understanding of their world.

Unlike modern religions that describe and even compel specific behavior between individuals, these gods weren't as interested in policing morality. So, what about care for fellow humans? Or limits on sexual activity? Or even faith itself? Often these were not major concerns. Where the state took an interest, appropriate laws were passed and enforced. But the gods themselves traditionally judged these mortals primarily by the quantity and quality of their worship.

Those rules became the foundation of the state religion because leaders knew they could not be successful if their subjects were displeasing the gods. Consequently, they built extraordinary temples to honor their many deities, brought food and wine to them, sacrificed animals for them, and held sacred meals in the gods' names-anything and everything to keep them happy.

Architecture, particularly remnants of temples, provide one source of our knowledge about these peoples and their practices-from the sanctuaries of Asklepios and Apollo to the Parthenon to the Caves of Mithras, and beyond. Professor Mueller, a scholar of Greek, Latin, and ancient history, is passionate about this period of history. In The Pagan World: Ancient Religions before Christianity, he discusses these extraordinary temple constructions and gives detailed descriptions from primary sources of intriguing personalities, including:

Art-Statuary, friezes, painting, mosaics, and vases throughout the Roman Empire;
Inscriptions-Pyramid texts and coffin texts found in Egypt ; and
Literature-Writings of philosophers, historians, and politicians, such as Cicero, Euripides, Homer, Lucretius, Livy, Ovid, Plato, Sophocles, and the Rigveda (a text that would become an integral part of Hinduism).

The Benefits of Divination

The many gods of this ancient world were everywhere, with spirits inhabiting every crack and crevice of life. Names of the many gods included:

Vesta, goddess of the family hearth;
Venus, goddess of sex;
Mars, god of the agricultural and military fields;
Maia, goddess of nature;
Limentinus, god of the threshold; and
Cardea, goddess of the door hinges.

Who could interpret the signs from all these deities? Even the common person could understand some. For example, did someone sneeze? Did the sacrificial animal walk willingly to the altar? If not, the gods were not interested. Did the altar burn brightly or did the flame sputter, full of smoke? Did the chickens eat greedily before the battle? Did Jupiter cause thunder and lightning in the midst of a political assembly ... on a sunny day? These and other portents were viewed as a serious form of communication between humanity and the divine.

In addition, the Roman Empire had a panoply of priests, pontiffs, and augurs to interpret signs and hired Etruscan haruspices who were specially trained to "read" the entrails of sacrificed animals, particularly the livers. This was crucial; knowing how to compare what was seen inside the sacrificial animal to what was seen out in the world brought mortals and their gods into communion.

But the leadership didn't always agree on the interpretation of signs. And at this intersection of religion and politics, there were definite benefits of divination. The difficulty of interpreting portents and signs provided a forum for discussion and debate. Those conversations fostered creative approaches to a range of possible solutions. Rather than divide society, religious debate helped move people toward consensus.

Acceptance of Other Religions

It may feel like the modern, technology-driven world of today invented globalism. But the ancient peoples of the Near East, Greece, Asia Minor, and the entire Mediterranean had already created globalism as they traded with one another, spoke with each other, borrowed (and stole) ideas, and knew each other's cultures well. And nowhere is this more apparent than in religious practices.

For example, Roman leadership took a pragmatic position toward the unfamiliar faiths they incorporated into their territory. The newly conquered were allowed to practice their former religion-as long as their worship did not clash with the state-sanctioned religion or Roman rule. Conquest also led to rich innovations within religion as Roman society incorporated new gods and practices from the religions of their conquered peoples, including:

Worship of the Greek gods (with new Latin names);
The cult of Isis, which originated in Egypt and spread throughout the empire;
The cult of Mithras, which originated in Persia and was particularly popular among the Roman soldiers; and
Manichaeism, which also originated in Persia and addressed the duality of good and evil.

Rome did not accept all religions, however; they would not tolerate practices that went directly against the law of the land. Consequently, problems were bound to arise between the authority of the state and the worshippers of Bacchus, Druids, Jews, and Christians-something history has since proved.

We know that Christianity, Judaism, and Islam still exist in the present day-but so do some ancient, polytheistic religions, at least in some forms. Not only has there been some resurgence in the interest and practice of pagan and polytheistic religions in modern times, but the Rigveda, a collection of hymns from this ancient period, eventually became one of the four sacred texts of Hinduism-one of the most populous and influential religions of the world today. Monotheism may have become predominant in much of the world, but ancient practices and beliefs live on in our culture and many others-in stories and myths as well as in practice and faith.

VariCAD is 3D / 2D CAD software primarily intended for mechanical engineering design. The comprehensive CAD software enables designers to quickly create, evaluate, and modify their models. The software is sold as one "fully loaded" package, with all features and functions, for one very affordable price. VariCAD delivers an excellent performance-to-price ratio, making it one of the smartest choices on the market today.

User Interface and System Environment
VariCAD's Graphical User Interface (GUI) has been designed to allow quick and intuitive 3D/2D orientation. It has been carefully tailored and tuned to reflect the thought process of a designer, so that ideas can be captured and communicated with a minimal number of steps. All commands were created with a focus on ease of use.

You can start by creating a 3D model and then use it to automatically create drawings files, or you can draw only in 2D. Designing in 3D is generally more "natural," in that it closely represents actual parts and assemblies. The 3D approach is usually more intuitive than 2D drafting. Models created in 3D are easily converted into conventional 2D documentation. VariCAD provides tools for 2D updates after changes of 3D models.

3D Modeling
VariCAD provides a library of basic 3D shapes (like a box, cylinder, cone, etc.), which are easily modified by editing their dimensions. Solids can be created also by profile rotation, extrusion, or lofting. More complex tools include rotation blending between two profiles, lofting between a circle and rectangle or between different profiles, and creation of helical surfaces.

Solids can be added or subtracted, thus forming Boolean trees representing real mechanical parts. Boolean operations have options of automatic trimming (so called selective Boolean operations). Predefined operations like drilling of holes, face milling or groove milling are also available. Edges can be rounded or chamfered. VariCAD provides a lot of possibilities of solid transformations or their editing. Also, you can easily edit Boolean trees - either selecting solid parts from 3D, or selecting them from a list displaying structure.

Parameters and Geometrical Constraints
Although you can comfortably transform solids or their parts, you can optionally define geometrical constraints. Once defined, constraints allow you "to stick" object at defined location. More exactly, you can remove degrees of freedom of constrained objects. If other objects are changed or transformed, constrained object changes its position automatically. For instance, if you constrain a groove to the end of a shaft and the shaft length is changed, the groove remains in constant distance from the end edge. Constraints can be defined among elements of a solid, among entire solids or within a 2D profile creating a solid (for instance, by extrusion).

Whenever you enter a dimension of solid, a distance in constraint or dimension in 2D profile used for solid creation, you can optionally use parameter or even a mathematical expression containing parameters. Changing parameter values, you can change shapes or locations of solids.

3D Assemblies and Groups
VariCAD also provides tools for assembly support. If the link between a part and assembly is defined, any changes made to the part file are reflected in the assembly file and vice-versa. Linked copies of solids can also be defined (so called identical solids). In such case, editing of one object causes update of all its identical copies. Solid groups can be defined as well, making selection and visibility changes simple, for multiple objects.
Crash Tests (Interferences)

One excellent feature of 3D modeling is component interference checking. VariCAD can check 3D assemblies for possible collisions (overlapping volume) between components.

Calculations
VariCAD can calculate 2D section area, surface area, volume, mass, center of gravity, and moment of inertia. Mechanical parts calculations are also included - for standard parts used every day by mechanical designers. There are calculations of tension and compression springs, pre-stressed bolted connections, pins and parallel keys, grooved shafts, bearings, beams under combined stress (bending and torsion), spur and bevel gearing geometry, and belt drives.
Surface Development (Sheet Metal Unbending)

VariCAD can also create developed (unbent) surfaces of 3D solids or sheet metal parts. The XY coordinates of developed surfaces can be saved into a text file for further processing. You can input bending coefficients in order to customize your calculations, to reflect material and technology.
Mechanical Part and Symbol Libraries VariCAD contains libraries of standard mechanical parts (ANSI, DIN), such as bolts, nuts, pins, plugs, cotters, gaskets, bearings, rolled and drawn shapes, and hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical symbols.

3D - 2D Export
3D models are easily converted into 2D drawings to produce conventional drafting documentation. You can create 2D views of one or more selected solids by defining the views in 3D. In addition, you can also export specified sections. VariCAD supports updates of a 2D drawing after changes in 3D.

2D Drawing and Editing
Drawing functions are optimized for easy use in engineering. Some handy features of 2D drawing include: automatic detection of objects and snap points, numerous snap modes, auxiliary construction lines, Ortho mode, rectangular grid, drawing layers, block creation, hatching with automatic border detection, advanced dimensioning, finish symbols, welding symbols, tolerance symbols, and many more. You can draw in millimeters or in inches.

BOM and Title Blocks
VariCAD provides tools for maintaining the data structure of the product. There are links between attributes of parts and content of title blocks. You can create a bill of material (BOM) from an assembly, or easily modify the database using commands like mass attribute changes, sorting of information, etc. Each part can contain attributes, like name, type of material or supplier. Such data can be used for material requisitions, creation of bills of materials (BOM), filling of title blocks, or other purposes.

The data structure of the product (BOM) can be exported into other systems or into a spreadsheet. A mask is used for BOM customization; you can modify it exactly according to your needs. Mask defines usage of solid or assembly attributes, working with title blocks, methods of data exports from BOM etc...

Compatibility
VariCAD can interchange files with other CAD systems. You can export STEP (3D), STL (3D), IGES (3D), DWG (2D), DXF (2D) files, and import STEP (3D), DWG (2D), DXF (2D). The files can be converted individually or in batch routines, thereby converting multiple files in one step.

- Solid Edge stops certifying new releases against an operating system shortly after Microsoft drops mainstream support for it. Microsoft dropped mainstream support for Windows 7 in January 2015. Microsoft dropped mainstream support for Windows 8.1 in January 2018. Due to limited support from Microsoft and graphics card vendors for older operating systems, installation of Solid Edge on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 is not recommended. Solid Edge will install and run on these operating systems, but issues determined to be caused by an incompatibility between Solid Edge and an end of life operating system may not be fixed. Due to the potential for critical issues on these older operating systems, Solid Edge 2020 could be the last Solid Edge release that installs on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
