Visual Subst is a handy utility which allows you to associate the most accessed directories with virtual drives.

It solves 3 main issues with the built-in 'subst' command: it seamlessly creates drives for elevated applications, adds editable drive labels and restores virtual drives after reboots. Also, Visual Subst makes it easier to create, edit and remove virtual drives in a GUI way.
You can use virtual drives everywhere - it's so much easier to access files in a project directory you are currently working on using just a single drive letter. Visual Subst provides you with a clean, simple and distraction-free user interface where you can manage all your virtual drives at any .

Generally, a virtual drive is a symbolic link in the local MS-DOS device namespace. It is just one more Windows feature added for backward compatibility with old programs and batch scripts.

Unfortunately, there are some significant limitations with the built-in 'subst' command under Windows Vista and above. Virtual drives created with 'subst' command aren't visible for elevated applications (if you run a file manager or Command Prompt as administrator, you will realize that apps see these drives differently). You cannot define drive labels - label of the source drive is always used and it cannot be changed. All virtual drives are removed when the user logs off or restarts the computer.

UAC and elevated applications: Visual Subst seamlessly creates virtual drives for elevated applications duplicating the drives created for the standard user. It bypasses UAC prompts using the same technique as Hidden Start with /NOUAC switch making no distraction to the user.

REAPER is a powerful but sensible Windows application that lets you record, arrange, edit, and render multi-track waveform audio.

It provides an extensive set of features, but is a very small and lightweight application (the installer is less than 1 megabyte, and includes many effects and a sample project). REAPER supports ASIO, Kernel Streaming, WaveOut, and DirectSound for playback and recording. It reads WAV, OGG, and MP3 files, and records WAV files. You can arrange any number of items in any number of tracks and use audio processing plug-ins (DirectX and Jesusonic). REAPER also supports volume, pan controls and envelopes per track, multi-layer undo/redo, and user creatable color themes.

This Advanced Disk Test, which is part of PerformanceTest, measures the data transfer speed when reading or writing data to one or more disks. The speed that data can be transferred between memory and a hard disk drive is one of a system's most important performance aspects. There are quite a few factors which have a bearing on this speed and the Advanced Disk Drive Test allows the user to vary most of these factors and compare the results.

This test (part of PerformanceTest), allows the data read speed from a CD or DVD drive to be measured. Measuring the write speed to CD-Rs and CD-RWs is also available on Windows 2000, XP and 2003 Server. Vista and Windows 7 use a different write method that is not yet supported as of PT 7.0. The rate at which a CD Drive can read data from a CD ROM varies about many factors. Firstly, and most importantly, is the speed of the manufactured drive. Older drives list speeds of 2X or 4X, (1X = 0.1536 MB/Sec), whereas top end drives at of writing are now advertised as having speeds of 48X and 56X.

Included in PerformanceTest is the Advanced 3D graphics test which allows users to change the tailor the settings of the 3D tests to create one to suit their testing needs. 3D Graphics technology has come on in leaps and bounds over the last few years and these tests can help measure how fast 3D images can be created and displayed.

The Advanced Memory Test is part of the PerformanceTest application, and it is designed to test several factors which affect the speed of which data is accessed in PC memory.

This test allows you to view a visualization of what is happening in the standard CPU physics test. It also allowsyou to customize the test to produce different results.

Microsoft DirectCompute is a set of DirectX 11 APIs that allow general purpose computing (typically performed by the CPU) to be performed on the GPU. This takes advantage of the enormous parallel computation capacity of GPUs that would be well suited for parallel, computationally-intensive operations. DirectCompute is fully supported on DirectX 11 GPUs and partially supported on DirectX 10 GPUs. DirectX 11 run libraries are required to run these tests. These libraries are only available for Vista and Windows 7.
