The Founding Fathers faced a mess; they responded by creating a mess.
Part II traces two hundred years of innovations-many of them subtle but highly consequential-to the plan described in the Constitution. As the new nation rapidly descended into bitter political conflict, many of the framers themselves, driven by their partisan interests, massaged the Electoral College into a form that differed profoundly from their founding intentions. Part III examines how our strange presidential election system has produced frustrating results with increasing frequency in recent elections. Who can forget the Bush-Gore contest of 2000, when the results hinged on "hanging chads" and fewer than 1,500 votes in Florida? Americans endured weeks of a single-state recount, only to have the Supreme Court halt the process and hand the election to George W. Bush. Bush won the Electoral College by a single vote, but Al Gore captured 500,000 more popular votes. Then, in 2016, Donald Trump stunned the world with a substantial Electoral College victory of 302-227, though nearly 3 million more Americans preferred his opponent, and roughly 7 million voted for a third-party candidate.The system increasingly returns results that conflict with the expressed wishes of a majority of voters, a product of our hyper-polarized landscape and unique geopolitical distribution of party loyalists.

El hombre era blanco. La mujer era negra, y en Hollywood, en 1959, eso aún era tabú.
La tórrida escena se rodó para la película Málaga, y la actriz que la protagonizaba, Dorothy Dandridge, acababa de compartir el polémico primer beso interracial de Hollywood en la pantalla un año antes. A pesar de esta distinción y de otros logros más notables, hoy en día mucha gente no conoce a esta innovadora actriz, a pesar de que fue una de las más carismáticas y bellas de la época. Sus seductores números en clubes nocturnos hicieron vibrar a todo el mundo y fue la primera actriz negra de Hollywood.
Lamentablemente, todo ello tuvo un alto precio. Dorothy llevó las cicatrices de una infancia atormentada, soportó las secuelas de múltiples relaciones fracasadas, sufrió reveses profesionales y financieros y luchó contra el abuso continuado de alcohol y medicamentos. Durante todo ese tiempo, el racismo fue el demonio más tenaz contra el que tuvo que luchar, porque Dorothy alcanzó la mayoría de edad en una época en la que la sociedad y el mundo del espectáculo mantenían en gran medida estereotipos raciales degradantes. Aunque apareció en 15 películas, su carrera se vio eclipsada por el trabajo de leyendas blancas contemporáneas de la pantalla como Grace Kelly, Judy Garland y Marilyn Monroe. Dorothy creía, comprensiblemente, que podría haber llegado a ser mucho más si hubiera nacido blanca. Como dijo conmovedoramente: "¿Qué era yo? ¿Esa anticuada 'mulata trágica' de la ficción anterior? Por extraño que parezca, este concepto sigue teniendo cierta validez en una sociedad aún no integrada. Yo no era plenamente aceptado en ninguno de los dos mundos, blanco o negro. Alcanzó el estrellato como protagonista de la película Carmen Jones, en 1954, y su interpretación le valió una nominación al Oscar a la mejor actriz, el primer Oscar para una mujer negra.
