Dann schlitzte er der Kleinen die Kehle auf und tötete anschließend ihre Mutter Brenda. Zu dem Doppelmord angestiftet worden war er von seinem Bruder Ron, und der hatte den Mordauftrag angeblich direkt von Gott.

Ron wurde später zum Tode verurteilt. Dan selbst zu zweifach lebenslanger Haft. Das sind kurz zusammengefasst die Fakten dieser von zwei aus der "Kirche Christi der Heiligen der Letzten Tage" exkommunizierten fundamentalistischen Mormonen begangenen Bluttat. Als Hintergrund vermutet man Rache. Offenbar machte Ron seine Schwägerin dafür verantwortlich, dass ihm seine Frau im Streit um den rechten Glauben zuerst den Gehorsam verweigert hatte und ihm dann auch noch davongelaufen war. Wohl daraufhin befahl der entrüstete Mormonengott - "Es ist mein Wille und Gebot, dass du die folgenden Menschen beseitigst" -, Brenda samt ihres Kindes zu töten.
Doch von dem vordergründig persönlichen Motiv darf man sich nicht in die Irre führen lassen. Der "religiöse" Hintergrund ist nämlich, wie Jon Krakauer in seinem neuen Buch sehr anschaulich belegt, aus mehreren Gründen über die konkrete Tat hinaus von einiger Bedeutung. Zwar gehören Ron und Dan Lafferty zu einer Splittergruppe mormonischer Fundamentalisten. Doch auch die offizielle "Kirche Jesu der Heiligen der Letzten Tage", die - bei beängstigend hoher Geburtenrate - über eine Millionenschar äußerst missionsfreudiger Anhänger verfügt, beruht selbst auf dem extrem verqueren Gebräu einer vermeintlich göttlichen Offenbarung. Diese soll 1823 dem Wahrsager Joseph Smith aus Vermont in der Gestalt eines Engels mit dem Namen Mormoni zuteil geworden sein, der ihm eine in massive Goldplatten geprägte heilige Schrift zuspielte, die er mithilfe einer wundersamen Brille und eines Zaubersteins entziffert und übersetzt haben will. Das Ergebnis ist das 1828/29 von ihm diktierte Book of Mormon, das der 1830 gegründeten mormonischen Kirche seither als Bibel gilt.
Einige Jahre später hat der mit seiner Goldplattenfantasie unerwartet erfolgreiche Autor unter dem Titel Lehre und Bündnisse ein weiteres, die mormonische Lehre ausdifferenzierendes Werk mit angeblichen Offenbarungen vorgelegt, das den Erfolg noch beschleunigte. Außer der darin vorgeschriebenen (und für die enorme Geburtenrate mitverantwortlichen) Vielehe, die die "Kirche Christi der Heiligen der Letzten Tage" mittlerweile offiziell verworfen hat, gibt es noch so manch anderes denkwürdige Gebot, für das mancher Mormone notfalls sein eigenes Leben herzugeben bereit ist. Dan Lafferty sieht selbst eine Parallele zwischen sich und den Terrorpiloten vom 11. September. Diese, so sagt er, seien bereit gewesen, im Wesentlichen dasselbe zu tun wie er, allerdings mit dem Unterschied, dass sie im Gegensatz zu ihm einem falschen Propheten gefolgt seien. Die Islamisten dürften dies genau umgekehrt sehen. Woraus wir einmal mehr den Schluss ziehen, dass jeder gefährlich ist, der vorgibt einen direkten Draht zu Gott zu haben.
