A 31 de janeiro de 378 d.C., um exército maciço chegou às portas da cidade de Tikal, uma das mais importantes povoações maias na Península de Yucatán. Os acontecimentos que ocorreram ficaram conhecidos pelo nome espanhol "Entrada", referindo-se à "entrada de Teotihuacan". Embora não exista um registo claro dos acontecimentos devido à enorme escala de destruição que ocorreu, é evidente que nem Tikal nem os maias no seu todo tinham visto algo semelhante, porque estes soldados estrangeiros não só conquistaram como também governaram Tikal, apesar de terem vindo de Teotihuacan, localizada a cerca de 630 milhas (1.013 quilómetros) de distância. Nesse processo, os teotihuacanos não só mudaram Tikal, mas também o rumo da civilização maia durante os séculos seguintes.

Na altura, Teotihuacan era a maior cidade da América do Sul e estava localizada no Vale do México, perto da atual Cidade do México. Prosperando entre 100-750 d.C., era uma das maiores cidades do mundo antigo, com uma população estimada em mais de 150.000-250.000 habitantes, mais de três vezes o tamanho das capitais maias contemporâneas. Além disso, Teotihuacan era uma cidade extremamente bem planeada e eficiente, capaz de reunir exércitos maciços e estender o seu poder muito para além da sua base, criando um império unificado diferente de tudo o que existia na região antes dela. De facto, os habitantes da cidade pareciam tão seguros do seu poder que,aparentemente, não havia muros ou fortificações militares à volta de Teotihuacan. Graças a esse poder, Teotihuacan não só serviu como um centro vital para o comércio na antiga Mesoamérica, mas também difundiu a sua arquitetura, arte, religião e cultura, que posteriormente influenciaram as famosas civilizações mesoamericanas que se seguiram, incluindo a Azteca e a Maia.
Apesar de Teotihuacan ter atingido o auge do seu poder e influência há cerca de 1500 anos, a cidade continua a ser um tema inesgotável de fascínio e debate, para além de ser o sítio arqueológico mais visitado do México. As origens da cidade permanecem misteriosas (tal como os fundadores da cidade) e os estudiosos continuam a criar teorias para explicar o seu desaparecimento. Entretanto, as civilizações mesoamericanas posteriores recordaram Teotihuacan e os astecas chegaram a considerar as ruínas da cidade como um local de culto.
