As tentativas da Europa para o apaziguar, sobretudo em Munique, em 1938, falharam, e a Alemanha nazi engoliu a Áustria e a Checoslováquia em 1939. A Itália também estava em marcha, invadindo a Albânia em abril de 1939. No entanto, a gota de água foi a invasão da Polónia pela Alemanha em 1 de setembro desse ano. Dois dias depois, a França e a Grã-Bretanha declararam guerra à Alemanha e a Segunda Guerra Mundial começou a sério.

Claro que, como a maioria das pessoas sabe agora, a invasão da Polónia foi apenas o prefácio da blitzkrieg nazi na maior parte da Europa Ocidental, que incluiria a Dinamarca, a Bélgica e a França no verão de 1940. A resistência destes países é muitas vezes retratada como fraca, e a narrativa é que os britânicos ficaram sozinhos em 1940 contra o ataque nazi, defendendo as Ilhas Britânicas durante a Batalha da Grã-Bretanha e impedindo uma potencial invasão alemã.
Em particular, a campanha na Polónia é recordada como uma campanha em que um exército polaco antiquado foi rapidamente esmagado pelo exército mais moderno do mundo. A única imagem da invasão nazi-soviética da Polónia em 1939 que ainda hoje permanece no imaginário popular é a dos lanceiros polacos a atacar os tanques alemães, num ataque valente mas idiota. Tendo surgido como uma peça de propaganda nazi, paradoxalmente adoptada pelos polacos como um mito patriótico, a carga fictícia obscurece os acontecimentos reais de setembro de 1939. Em menor número, com menos armas e menos equipado, o exército polaco infligiu, no entanto, pesadas perdas à Wehrmacht invasora. De facto, só o avanço inesperado das forças soviéticas vindas do Leste pôs rapidamente fim à luta e viu a república polaca ser novamente dividida após apenas 20 anos de independência. No entanto, a campanha que deu início à Segunda Guerra Mundial foi um sinal sangrento do que estava para vir, uma vez que o conflito tomou conta do mundo.
Na realidade, porém, a atual Linha Maginot revelou-se consideravelmente mais funcional do que a memória serviu. A verdadeira falha na estratégia militar francesa durante os primeiros dias da Segunda Guerra Mundial não residia na confiança nas fortificações Maginot, mas na negligência do exército em explorar as oportunidades militares criadas pela Linha. Para grande surpresa dos Aliados, os alemães não tiveram problemas em atravessar estas terras num espaço de semanas. E ao invadir a França pelo norte, os alemães simplesmente evitaram a Linha Maginot. Os franceses renderam-se em junho de 1940 e os britânicos escaparam por pouco ao desastre, transportando milhares de soldados e equipamento através do Canal da Mancha, em Dunquerque. Assim, em meados de 1940, as potências do Eixo e a União Soviética tinham invadido quase toda a Europa Ocidental. Com a França fora da guerra e sem a participação ativa dos Estados Unidos, a Grã-Bretanha ficou praticamente sozinha.
