Designed to reform contemporary British society, Joseph Addison and Richard Steele's The Tatler (1709-1711) and The Spectator (1711-1712, 1714) rely heavily on the representation of contemporary manners. In shaping such behavioural images, the authors made use of the satirical character sketch. Their character sketches (re)create social interactions between fictionalised representatives of moral types of men and women located in contemporary London. This study examines how Addison and Steele employed the character sketch to create a 'cosmography' of (wo)man by actively engaging with the observational approaches of contemporary naturalists. Addison and Steele adapted distinctly empirical methods (e.g. induction and deduction, note taking, repeated and collective observation) and appropriated the (medico-legal) case study to communicate and disseminate socio-moral knowledge. At the same time, the character sketch served them as a means to establish a taxonomic order of the socio-moral knowledge conveyed in the texts. The study sheds new light on the literary techniques and the methodological frameworks of two journals essentially associated with the British - and the European - Enlightenment.

Although the development of ideas about the motion and trajectory of comets has been investigated piecemeal, we lack a comprehensive and detailed survey of ph- ical theories of comets. The available works either illustrate relatively short periods in the history of physical cometology or portray a landscape view without adequate details. The present study is an attempt to review - with more details - the major physical theories of comets in the past two millennia, from Aristotle to Whipple. My research, however, did not begin with antiquity. The basic question from which this project originated was a simple inquiry about the cosmic identity of comets at the dawn of the astronomical revolution: how did natural philosophers and astronomers define the nature and place of a new category of celestial objects - comets - after Brahe's estimation of cometary distances? It was from this turning point in the history of cometary theories that I expanded my studies in both the pre-modern and modern eras. A study starting merely from Brahe and ending with Newton, without covering classical and medieval thought about comets, would be incomplete and leave the fascinating achievements of post-Newtonian cometology unexplored.

A Revolução Francesa foi um período turbulento que durou vários anos, e um dos acontecimentos mais famosos de toda a revolução ocorreu perto do início, com o Juramento do Campo de Ténis. Em julho de 1788, o rei Luís XVI concordou em convocar os Estados Gerais, um grande e tradicional órgão legislativo, pela primeira vez desde 1614. As finanças do país, já bastante frágeis, entraram em crise em agosto de 1788, com a França a enfrentar a falência.
Em março de 1789, foi definido o método eleitoral. Enquanto a nobreza e o clero realizariam eleições diretas, o Terceiro Estado, muito mais numeroso, elegeria representantes de cada distrito, que depois participariam em assembleias maiores para eleger os seus representantes oficiais no Terceiro Estado dos Estados Gerais.
Finalmente, na primavera de 1789, Luís XVI convocou os Estados Gerais. Deveriam ter-se reunido em Versalhes a 27 de abril, mas só o fizeram a 5 de maio. Os atrasos nas eleições continuaram durante o verão, uma vez que as condições do país atrasaram muitas eleições. Ao mesmo tempo, os preços do pão atingiram um máximo histórico, provocando motins em todo o país, especialmente em Paris. Durante o ritual formal que deu as boas-vindas aos Estados Gerais em 4 de maio de 1789, num precursor do que viria a acontecer nos meses seguintes, o Terceiro Estado recusou-se a ajoelhar-se perante o rei. Os deputados do Terceiro Estado apresentaram-se perante o rei, caminhando dois de cada vez, e fizeram uma vénia perante Luís XVI e Maria Antonieta. Não é de estranhar que aqueles que assistiram ao desfile dos Estados Gerais tivessem esperança numa reforma, mas passaram a esperar que os Estados Gerais servissem de instrumento da administração.
Enquanto o Primeiro e o Segundo Estado discutiam sobre questões e métodos de votação, o Terceiro Estado começou a organizar-se de uma forma diferente. A 7 de junho, Maximilien Robespierre, de 30 anos, fez um discurso apaixonado criticando a riqueza do clero, o que chamou a atenção de todo o Terceiro Estado. Com o encorajamento de alguns membros, o Terceiro Estado dá os primeiros passos para se declarar Assembleia Nacional, a 10 de junho. Jean-Sylvain Bailly foi escolhido como Presidente do Terceiro Estado e, a 10 de junho de 1789, o Terceiro Estado enviou uma mensagem aos outros dois estados, pedindo-lhes que se unissem e concordassem com uma verificação comum ou com o voto por cabeça. Não obtiveram qualquer resposta e optaram por prosseguir sem o consentimento ou a participação do Primeiro e do Segundo Estado. Assim, o Terceiro Estado declarou-se o único órgão representativo legítimo, designando-se por "Comuns". A opinião pública recebeu a notícia com grande apoio e, nos dias seguintes, alguns membros do clero apresentaram-se. Os "Comuns" tornaram-se a Assembleia Nacional a 17 de junho de 1789 e, dois dias depois, o clero aderiu oficialmente à Assembleia Nacional.
Enquanto o Terceiro Estado se autodenominava Assembleia Nacional, Luís estava mais preocupado com a morte do Delfim, de nove anos. Ele e Maria Antonieta tinham apenas dois filhos vivos, Maria Teresa e Luís Carlos, e a morte do filho mais velho tinha atirado Luís XVI para um período de depressão e inação. Estava de certo modo consciente dos acontecimentos que os rodeavam, mas não se apercebia da sua importância.
