Die Stücke von Dramatikern wie Aristophanes zeichneten sich nicht nur durch einen scharfen Witz und ein so ausgeprägtes Genie für politische Satire aus, dass ihre Werke bis heute aufgeführt werden - und aktuell sind -, sondern sie dienten auch als Inspiration für praktisch alle Dramatiker von Shakespeare bis heute. Ganz zu schweigen von den vielen ebenso brillanten Mathematikern, Naturphilosophen, Historikern, Astronomen und Politikern, die die großen Schulen der Stadt hervorgebracht haben.

Im Jahr 427 v. Chr. blühte der antike griechische Stadtstaat Athen. Etwa 80 Jahre zuvor hatten die Athener die erste selbstrepräsentative Demokratie der Geschichte gegründet, der Peloponnesische Krieg gegen Sparta hatte gerade erst begonnen, und Sokrates war gerade dabei, den Grundstein für die spätere westliche Philosophie zu legen.
Keines der Werke von Sokrates hat die Antike überlebt, so dass das meiste, was über ihn bekannt ist, aus den Schriften seiner Anhänger stammt, vor allem von Platon. Über Sokrates ist bekannt, dass er anscheinend eine Karriere in der Philosophie anstrebte, und Platon war entschlossen, in seine Fußstapfen zu treten. Doch trotz des Einflusses, den Sokrates' Leben auf seine Anhänger hatte, war es der Tod von Sokrates um 399 v. Chr., der sie wirklich prägte. Platon war durch den Prozess gegen Sokrates in Athen so verbittert, dass er die athenische Demokratie völlig ablehnte, und Aristoteles kritisierte später Politiker, die sich auf Rhetorik verließen; als Aristoteles' eigenes Leben bedroht war, floh er aus Griechenland und soll gesagt haben: "Ich werde nicht zulassen, dass sich die Athener zweimal gegen die Philosophie versündigen."
Da Sokrates nichts aufgeschrieben hat, zumindest nichts, was die Antike überdauert hat, gibt es seither eine Fülle von wissenschaftlichen Versuchen, die Person zu bestimmen, der die philosophischen Positionen der verschiedenen (und echten) sokratischen Dialoge Platons zuzuschreiben sind. Auch wenn Aristoteles darauf bestand, dass Sokrates sich nur um Ethik kümmerte und keine metaphysische Theorie vertrat, wie sie Platon vertrat, hielt der Versuch, den hässlichen, aber weisen Sokrates über die platonischen Dialoge zu lesen, bis ins 20. Der Wechsel des Tons, des Stils und der philosophischen Themen schien ein großes Argument dafür zu sein, dass die sokratischen Ansichten in den frühen platonischen Werken zu finden sind, während die späteren Werke den Stempel der persönlichen Ansichten Platons tragen. Der Platonforscher Gregory Vlastos führte eine entwicklungsgeschichtliche Position ein, die in der Platonforschung fast zur Orthodoxie geworden ist, indem er die Diskussion vom historischen Sokrates auf Platon als Philosoph verlagerte. Wenn die Ansichten im Dialog nicht nur dargelegt werden, um später widerlegt zu werden, sollte man sie Platon und nicht Sokrates zuschreiben, so der Developmentalismus.

This Element explores ways in which language teachers, especially teachers of English, can benefit from knowledge of phonetics. It also offers recommendations for introducing and improving pronunciation teaching in the classroom. While hoping that this Element is useful to instructors of all languages, the majority of the examples comes from North American English (NAE) and the English language classroom. At the same time, the Element acknowledges that English language teaching is rather different from the teaching of other languages, since nowadays, most interactions around the world in English do not involve a native speaker, and use of English as a lingua franca (ELF) has become widespread. Teachers of English should be aware that their students may not want to mimic all aspects of native-speaker pronunciation; since some native-speaker patterns of speech, such as the extensive simplification and omission of sounds may not be helpful in enhancing intelligibility.
