A mediados de febrero de 1945, los Aliados avanzaban con paso firme contra los alemanes tanto desde el este como desde el oeste: las fuerzas británicas y estadounidenses habían rechazado la ofensiva alemana durante la Batalla de las Ardenas y el Ejército Rojo de la Unión Soviética presionaba desde el este. De hecho, la guerra acabaría en poco más de dos meses. Sin embargo, fue durante este periodo cuando los Aliados llevaron a cabo uno de los ataques más notorios de la guerra: el ataque a Dresde. Las intenciones del ataque son golpear al enemigo donde más lo sentirá, detrás de un frente ya parcialmente colapsado... y de paso mostrar a los rusos cuando lleguen lo que el Mando de Bombarderos puede hacer".
En el lapso de unas 48 horas, Dresde fue blanco de más de 1.200 bombarderos aliados, que arrojaron casi 4.000 toneladas de explosivos sobre la ciudad. Las tormentas de fuego provocadas por este bombardeo arrasaron 1.600 hectáreas y mataron al menos a decenas de miles de personas de forma espantosa. Irónicamente, muchas de las víctimas de Dresde habían huido del frente oriental ante el avance de los soviéticos, comprensiblemente preocupados por el tipo de castigo que los soviéticos impondrían a los alemanes capturados en respuesta a las atrocidades cometidas en Rusia durante la guerra.
Como se indicaba en la nota de la RAF, Dresde estaba relativamente intacta antes de los ataques, y el bombardeo fue justificado por los Aliados debido a que Dresde albergaba cientos de fábricas y un ferrocarril crucial.
