Seit rund 10 Jahren pflegt die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Humanökologie (DGH) an ihren Jahrestagungen das interdisziplinäre Gespräch zu ausgewählten, für die Umweltproblematik relevanten Themen. Daraus ist eine Reihe von Bänden ent standen, die alle im Westdeutschen Verlag erschienen sind: * Bemhard Glaeser (Hrsg. ): Humanökologie (1989); * Bemhard Glaeser und Parto Teherani-Krönner (Hrsg. ): Humanökologie und Kulturökologie ( 1992); * Karl Aurand, Barbara P. Hazard und Felix Tretter (Hrsg. ): Umweltbelastungen und Ängste (1993); * Josef Schmid (Hrsg. ): Bevölkerung * Umwelt * Entwicklung (1994). Der vorliegende Band setzt diese Reihe fort; er ist das Ergebnis der DGH-Jahres tagung 1994, die vom 5. bis zum 7. Mai in Sommerhausen am Main (bei Würz burg) stattfand und dem Thema "Mensch und Lebensraum. Fragen zu Identität und Wissen" gewidmet war. Ich habe damals in kurzen Beiträgen auf den DGH Seiten in der Zeitschrift GAlA vor der Tagung das Thema vorgestellt und nach der Tagung auch über sie berichtet. ' Dieses Buch nun enthält die schriftlichen Fassungen der an der Tagung gehaltenen Vorträge, zusätzlich aber auch einen in anderem Zusammenhang geschriebenen, aber zum Thema passenden Artikel von Ulrich Eise!, der an der Tagung die Diskussionsleitung übernommen hatte, und schließlich auch einen Beitrag von mir selbst, den ich nachträglich speziell für diese Publikation verfaßt habe. Die Fertigstellung des Buches hat sich aus Überlastungsgründen, vor allem aber einer ernsthaften Erkrankung wegen hinausgezögert. Umso mehr freut es mich, daß sie jetzt doch noch gelungen ist.

A glib assessment of Metternich might not be a favourable one, he was not without his ridiculous qualities, and yet he survived, more than survived, in fact, with the 'Age of Metternich' lasting for more than a generation, and giving Europe a measure of peace, albeit repressive, that was much needed after the Napoleonic convulsions.

Alan Palmer describes well Metternich's extraordinary longevity. 'Clement von Metternich held continuous office at the head of Europe's affairs for a longer period of time than any other statesman in modern history: he became foreign minister of the Austrian Empire in the autumn of 1809 and he did not resign until the spring of 1848. For thirty-three of these thirty-nine years his statecraft and philosophy of government determined the political pattern of the continent.
The 'Age of Metternich' , though often impatiently dismissed by historians as a mere interlude, lasted for twice as long as the 'Age of Napoleon' which preceded it and for half as long again as the 'Age of Bismarck' which followed in the closing decades of the century.'
Metternich was a statesman to his fingertips, practising 'the skills of diplomacy with greater fluency than any contemporary Talleyrand, from whom he had learnt many of the refinement of the game.'
How would he fare today? Probably quite well as he was, again in Alan Palmer's words, 'an early champion of federalism and a good European ...'
