It is well worth sticking with his argument to see how it works out in practice. Early chapters with phrases in their titles such as "Spiritual Praxis of Practical Theology", "Integrative Gestalt of the Human Self", "Ecological Matrix of the Human Person" and "Social Ecology of Human Spirituality" might seem heavy going at times. Don't be put off! The reader is rewarded with highly relevant contemporary understandings of spirituality illuminating and illuminated by both Scripture and modern theologians and therapists. This book comes highly recommended for anyone involved in the field of mental health care.'

Der Einmarsch fand 1941 statt, nachdem die beiden Staaten 1939 einen Nichtangriffspakt geschlossen hatten, der es Hitler ermöglichte, sich auf den Westen zu konzentrieren, ohne einen Angriff von der Ostfront befürchten zu müssen. Während sich Deutschland auf den Westen konzentrierte, schickte die Sowjetunion große Truppenkontingente in die Grenzregion zwischen den beiden Ländern, und Stalins Plan, Gebiete in Polen und den baltischen Staaten zu erobern, erzürnte Hitler. 1940 betrachtete Hitler Stalin als große Bedrohung und fasste den Entschluss, in Russland einzumarschieren: "Im Laufe dieses Krieges muss Russland beseitigt werden... im Frühjahr 1941. Je früher wir Russland zerschlagen, desto besser". (Hoyt, S. 17)

Die überraschende deutsche Invasion im Jahr 1941 ermöglichte den deutschen Armeen einen raschen Vormarsch auf einer unglaublich breiten Front, doch als der Winter kam, mussten sich beide Seiten eingraben und auf deutsche Belagerungen russischer Städte vorbereiten. Im Frühjahr 1942 rückte Deutschland erneut auf Stalingrad vor, Stalins Lieblingsstadt. Kein Wunder, dass er befahl, sie um jeden Preis zu halten. Doch es ging um mehr als Eitelkeit. Stalingrad war alles, was zwischen Hitler und Moskau lag. Es war auch das letzte große Hindernis zu den russischen Ölfeldern im Kaukasus, die Stalin brauchte und Hitler begehrte. Würde die Stadt fallen, würde auch der Rest des Landes fallen, und Hitler hätte eine unschätzbare Ressource zur Versorgung seiner Armeen.
Als der sowjetisch-nazistische Nichtangriffspakt von 1939 durch eine deutsche Offensive gegen Russland gebrochen wurde, wurde die überraschte Rote Armee rasch von der polnischen Grenze nach Osten abgedrängt, und die russischen Streitkräfte sahen sich mit dem verzweifelten Versuch konfrontiert, die wichtigsten russischen Städte gegen die deutschen Invasoren zu verteidigen. Leningrad, das am Vorabend des deutschen Angriffs etwa drei Millionen Einwohner zählte, war eines der Opfer der russischen Unvorbereitetheit, aber als die Belagerung im Herbst 1941 begann, wussten die Sowjets, dass sie sich in einem verzweifelten Kampf auf Leben und Tod befanden. Tatsächlich hätten die Russen nicht einmal die Möglichkeit gehabt, zu kapitulieren, selbst wenn sie es gewollt hätten, denn der Befehl an die deutschen Streitkräfte lautete, die Stadt dem Erdboden gleichzumachen: "Nach der Niederlage Sowjetrusslands kann es kein Interesse am Fortbestand dieses großen städtischen Zentrums geben.... Nach der Einkreisung der Stadt werden Anträge auf Kapitulationsverhandlungen abgelehnt, da das Problem der Umsiedlung und Versorgung der Bevölkerung von uns nicht gelöst werden kann und darf. In diesem Krieg um unsere Existenz können wir kein Interesse daran haben, auch nur einen Teil dieser großen Stadtbevölkerung zu erhalten."
Den Russen gelang es gerade noch, die eingekesselte Stadt über einen schmalen Landkorridor zum Ladogasee zu versorgen, wobei die Transporte den See überquerten, wenn er im Winter zufror. Dieser Korridor wurde euphemistisch als "Straße des Lebens" bezeichnet, aber die prekären Bedingungen und die Luftwaffe führten auch dazu, dass viele ihn als "Straße des Todes" bezeichneten. Und obwohl es den Nazis nie gelang, diese Versorgungsroute vollständig abzuschneiden, starben während der fast 900 Tage dauernden Belagerung von September 1941 bis Januar 1944 mindestens 750.000 Zivilisten an Hunger, d. h. jeder dritte oder vierte Einwohner der Bevölkerung vor der Belagerung. Die Belagerung war so verheerend, dass die Zahl der Todesopfer unter der Zivilbevölkerung insgesamt auf über eine Million geschätzt wird.

La invasión se produjo en 1941 tras un pacto de no agresión firmado entre ambos en 1939, que permitió a Hitler centrar su atención en el oeste sin tener que preocuparse por un ataque desde el frente oriental. Los soviéticos también perdieron un número asombroso, con estimaciones de más de 1 millón de bajas.
En total, la batalla de Stalingrado fue la más mortífera de la historia de la guerra, y la decisiva victoria de los soviéticos en ella se considera uno de los mayores puntos de inflexión de toda la guerra, y desde luego del teatro de operaciones europeo.
