Cet ouvrage collectif rend compte des etudes et travaux archeologiques menes au sein de la necropole aux ruines megalithiques de Wanar, au Senegal, entre 2008 et 2017. Le sanctuaire de Wanar fait partie, avec Sine Ngayene au Senegal ainsi que Wassu et Ker Batch en Gambie, des quatre sites classes en 2006 au titre du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO. La premiere partie, fixe le cadre general tant pour ce qui concerne l'etude des paleo-environnements que pour les donnees historiques et archeologiques, et s'acheve par une petite synthese sur les megalithes en Afrique. La deuxieme partie rend compte de toutes les observations effectuees, avec d'abord une presentation du site de Wanar dans le cadre des implantations humaines le long de la vallee du Bao Bolon, puis l'expose des principales methodes d'etude mises en oeuvre. Vient ensuite une presentation detaillee des six monuments etudies, trois situes au nord de la necropole et disposant de monolithes courts et trapus, trois autres au sud disposant de monolithes etroits et allonges, edifies entre le XIe et le XIIIe siecle de notre ere. Le sanctuaire prenait alors la forme d'un village aux maisons de pierre, dediees aux morts et dans le cadre de funerailles differees, en trois temps comme pour bien des rites funeraires traditionnels pratiques aujourd'hui encore en Afrique de l'Ouest. L'occurrence de morts d'accompagnement ne saurait etre totalement ecartee, mais ne semble pas disposer du caractere systematique que lui pretait A. Gallay. De tels changements de paradigme dans l'etat des connaissances sur les megalithes du Senegal et de la Gambie supposent une relecture attentive des travaux precedents, ce qui fait l'objet de la troisieme et derniere partie. L'ensemble debouche sur une perspective historique dans un cadre beaucoup plus vaste, a l'echelle de la sous-region, qui la encore souleve bien des interrogations. La monographie de nos travaux sur le site de Wanar constitue donc un point d'etape important pour l'avancee des connaissances sur les societes protohistoriques et les batisseurs de megalithes en Afrique de l'Ouest, passionnant de par l'ensemble des donnees qu'il apporte et des perspectives nouvelles qu'il souleve, mais que nous soumettons au lecteur avec beaucoup d'humilite tant sont nombreux les points qu'il restera a eclaircir, a completer et parfois peut-etre aussi a remettre en cause, comme pour toute demarche scientifique.
