This collection of essays joins a small group of other studies bringing modern Japanese Confucianism to international scholarly notice, largely covering the time period between the Bakumatsu era of the mid-19th century and the 21st century.

The essays in this volume can be read for the insight they provide into the intellectual and ideological proclivities of reformers, educators and philosophers explicitly reconstructing Confucian thought, or more tacitly influenced by it, during critical phases in Japan's modernization, imperialist expansionism and post-1945 reconstitution as a liberal democratic polity. They can be read as introductions to the ideas of modern Japanese Confucian thinkers and reformers whose work is little known outside Japan―and sometimes barely remembered inside Japan. They can also be read as a needful corrective to the above-mentioned Sinocentric bias in the 20th century intellectual history of Confucianism. For those Confucian scholars currently exploring how Confucianism is, or can be made compatible with democracy, at least some of the studies in this volume serve as a warning. They enjoin readers to consider how Confucianism was also rendered compatible with the authoritarian ultranationalism and militarism that captured Japan's political system in the 1930s, and brought war to the Asia-Pacific region.

The opposing armies-44,000 men under Rosecrans and 37,000 under Bragg-locked bayonets on December 31, 1862, in some of the hardest fighting of the war. Bragg's initial attack drove the Federals back nearly three miles, captured 29 cannons, and thousands of prisoners. Somehow the Union lines held firm during the critical fighting along the Nashville Pike that afternoon against repeated determined attacks that left both armies bloodied and exhausted. The decisive moment came two days later when, in the fading afternoon of January 2, 1863, Bragg launched an assault on an isolated Union division on the east bank of Stones River. The Confederates once again enjoyed initial success only to be repulsed by 58 Union guns combined with a daring counterattack. This repulse broke Bragg's hold on Murfreesboro. He retreated the following night, leaving Rosecrans and his Cumberland army victors of the field.
Prior Stones River books, each excellent in its own way, focused on strategy, tactics, and high-level command decisions. Masters ably examines all these issues in a study carefully constructed to also present the view from the soldiers who fought the battle. His masterful use of hundreds of archival and firsthand accounts, many of which have never been published, sheds significant new light on the experiences of the front-line troops. Hell by the Acre is an unparalleled view of Civil War combat and tactical command from the men who pulled the triggers.
Stones River marked a turning point for Federal fortunes in the Western Theater, and this fresh and original study sets forth the hefty cost of securing that victory.

Margaret Pole was, therefore, one of the most senior members of the nobility at the Tudor court, and through her, her sons, her daughter, and her grandchildren possessed a dangerous name and dangerous bloodline, which put them on a collision course with the most volatile man ever to sit the throne of England. They were the old guard, the house of Plantagenet, the greatest ruling dynasty in English history, the true royal family, and this, coupled with the monumental shifts which England underwent during the reign of Henry VIII, all but ensured their destruction. For centuries, their story has been overlooked, or at best, fleetingly covered, but when one digs deep, a story as audacious and juicy as it's possible to be soon emerges.

Die Frage nach der Richtigkeit des Hirntodkriteriums ist nicht nur von theoretischem Interesse. Vielmehr kommt ihr deshalb eine besondere praktische Relevanz zu, im Kontext der Organtransplantation fast überall die sog. Totspenderregel gilt, d.h., Organe für die Transplantation dürfen (mit wenigen Ausnahmen) nur Toten entnommen werden. Allerdings mehren sich seit den 2000er Jahren Zweifel an der Richtigkeit dieses Kriteriums. Empirische Befunde zeigen, dass bei den sog. Hirntoten zahlreiche Lebensfunktionen intakt sind, obwohl diese nicht mehr vom Gehirn gesteuert werden. ‚Hirntote' können z.B. wachsen, die Geschlechtsreife erreichen oder ein Kind austragen. Diese Feststellung lässt vermuten, dass das Gehirn für die Aufrechterhaltung der Vitalfunktionen nicht so wichtig ist, wie die Verfechter des Hirntodkriteriums annehmen. Man kann weiterhin fragen, ob typische Merkmale von ‚Hirntoten' mit dem allgemein anerkannten Verständnis des Begriffs ‚Tod' vereinbar sind. Damit man ihnen Organe für die Transplantation entnehmen kann, müssen Hirntote beispielsweise künstlich ernährt werden. Kann man ohne Widerspruch behaupten, dass ein Organismus einerseits tot ist und dass er andererseits Nahrung benötigt, künstlich ernährt wird und einen Stoffwechsel mit seiner Umwelt vollzieht?
