Erst die Entwicklung bestimmter gesellschaftlicher Strukturen am Ende der Altsteinzeit verschaffte dem Homo sapiens entscheidende Vorteile. Nicht so sehr seine individuelle Intelligenz, sondern insbesondere seine Fähigkeit zur komplexen Arbeitsteilung hat dem Menschen die Herrschaft über die Erde ermöglicht.Aus diesem Grund wird das derzeit viel beschworene individuelle Neuro-Enhancement keinen großen Effekt haben - zumal nach Grüters Einschätzung keine der gegenwärtig diskutierten Methoden überhaupt zum Erfolg führen kann. Eine universale „Intelligenzpille" gibt es nicht, und schon gar keine ohne unerwünschte Nebenwirkungen. Auch über eine direkte Schnittstelle zwischen Gehirn und Computer wird sich die Intelligenz nicht erhöhen lassen. Zwar belegen die eindrucksvollen Erfolge der direkten Reizung des Hörnervs bei Taubheit, dass man Wahrnehmungen über Computer erzeugen und ans Gehirn weitergeben kann, aber eine allgemeine kognitive Leistungssteigerung ist auf diesem Wege nicht möglich. Und genetische Manipulationen zur Steigerung der Gehirnleistung bergen mehr Gefahren als Chancen. Schließlich geht der Autor noch der Frage nach, ob der von manchen Forschern vorgeschlagene Mind-Upload, die Übertragung des menschlichen Geistes in einen Supercomputer, möglich ist und welche Folgen er haben könnte. Und er wirft einen skeptischen Blick auf die Forschungen zur künstlichen (Hyper-)Intelligenz.Grüter schreibt lebendig und veranschaulicht die schwierige Materie immer wieder mit kurzen Erzählungen.
