Aerospace manufacturers increasingly use a model-based approach for product development. This approach captures all the details of a design into a digital 3D CAD model. Though model-based definition offers a number of design advantages (including reduced time-to-part and more fficient communication), it also creates unique challenges for downstream users of the design data, particularly quality engineers. These engineers need new tools within the 3D CAD environment that enable their quality processes to be used and, if desired, allow for creation of quality plans from within a digital 3D viewing environment.

The Quality Planning Environment (QPE) makes the process of defining characteristics and creating inspection items, and moving them into quality plans for inspection, faster and easier than traditional approaches.
