The Simcenter development team is pleased to announce the availability of Simcenter Flotherm 2020.2. This release is focused on extended support to electrothermal circuit simulation and system modeling in boundary condition independent reduced order models (BCI-ROM technology), improved joule heating solver speed, and more.



Joule heating simulation - faster

Joule heating solver improvements have been made resulting in significant simulation speed up. Tests indicate a speed up of between 4 -10 times faster!


The impact is obviously model dependent. However, such solve time reduction allows for greater opportunity to evaluate critical joule heating influences in more complex models during development.

Accurate electrothermal circuit simulation earlier with BCI-ROMs in VHDL-AMS format

Building on increasing demand for accuracy in electrothermal circuit simulation environments, and earlier, closer electrical-thermal design workflow, Simcenter Flotherm 2020.2 adds generation of BCI-ROMs in VHDL-AMS format. VHDL-AMS is built on IEEE Standard 1076.1 and is a hardware description language used in multi-domain simulation of analog, digital, and mixed-signal systems. This BCI-ROM format better supports transient modeling of operating modes and power-aware control in a circuit simulation tool. It extends beyond the VHDL-AMS thermal netlist generation capabilities introduced in the prior Simcenter Flotherm 2020.1 release. The thermal model supply chain from semiconductor OEM to electronics integrator is better connected for electrothermal circuit simulation tasks as result.

In short, the "boundary condition independent" aspect of reduced order models is extremely valuable, as this enables BCI-ROMs to be used in any thermal environment, while maintaining accuracy. It makes connected electrical and thermal circuit concurrent modeling achievable. With this release, BCI-ROM technology now supports both BCI-ROM and Thermal Netlist generation in VHDL-AMS and spice format for use with circuit simulation tools such as SystemVision Cloud, Xpedition AMS and many others.

Further reduced order modeling enhancements, including for 1D system simulation

Simcenter Flotherm BCI-ROM technology creates fast solving, accurate reduced order models from a 3D conduction thermal model and can be utilized in several different formats. Formats generated can run in 3rd party numerical computational tools to solve BCI-ROM matrices, in circuit simulation modeling tools (see above) and also in 1D system modeling tools (FMU format). Now it is possible also to solve BCI-ROM matrices for fast transient thermal studies in a Simcenter Flotherm standalone utility.


New Command line utility to solve BCI ROM Matrices

Simcenter Flotherm 2020.2 introduces a command line utility "BCI-ROM Matrices Standalone Solver for Simcenter Flotherm" which complements existing methods utilizing solver harnesses in 3rd party software tools. The standalone utility installs as an executable with the software. To generate BCI-ROM matrices, you simply select export option "Matrices" in the preferences window.

BCI-ROM Export option to create the Functional Mock Up (FMU) for System Simulation

BCI-ROM generation in FMU format for system simulation tools such as Simcenter Flomaster , Simcenter Amesim and others was introduced at Simcenter Flotherm 2020.1. Now in version 2020.2, generation is much easier within the interface, by selecting FMU directly as an export option rather than via a command line utility.

Design motors based on realistic workloads

The typical design sequence of electric machines involve many iterations, especially during early stages of design. And identifying the most important load points for a given design problem is difficult.

In Simcenter Motorsolve 2020.2, we've added a user defined duty cycle based performance analysis capability. Therefore, the new capability allows the designers to incorporate realistic vehicle behavior into the design process and calculate losses for an arbitrary load profile.

By importing the machine performance requirements from Simcenter Amesim, Simcenter Motorsolve can use this data to advance the design process. The losses and top five most important load points are calculated.


Included are a number of standard drive cycles for the automotive sector. The users will have to supply the vehicle torque and rotor speed information to use the new feature.

Pulse Width Modulation analysis with arbitrary voltages

Calculating machine performances based on measured or arbitrary voltages using low frequency electromagnetic finite element analysis based calculations is time consuming or impractical, often due to high signal frequencies.

In Simcenter Motorsolve 2020.2, the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) analysis option can determine these results. An additional option of simulating arbitrary voltage profile based performance calculations is now part of the PWM analysis capability

Therefore, digital twins or model calibrations can be based off of measurements imported directly from dynamometers or other sources.


User specified arbitrary voltage profiles can be used in Simcenter Motorsolve 2020.2 to determine electric motor performance

Design Halbach Array electric motors in Simcenter Motorsolve 2020.2

New templates support the creation of Halbach array patterns with even and odd numbered magnet segments per pole. It also includes the ability to apply unevenly distributed segments with user defined magnetization directions. Here's an excerpt from "What is a Halbach array and how is it used in electric motors?" by Danielle Collins highlights their benefits:

".electric motors based on the Halbach array offer measurable benefits over conventional designs, including high power density and high efficiency. One of the enablers of these benefits is that a Halbach array motor does not require laminations or back iron, so the motor is essentially ironless. This significantly reduces eddy current losses and hysteresis losses. "

Maximum torque and flux weakening control

Motor performance is highly dependent on the control strategy. This link impacts performance parameters like efficiency, loss and power output. In Simcenter Motorsolve 2020.2, the maximum torque per amps and flux weakening control strategy based optimal load point calculations have been added. Consequently, you can plot efficiency maps, loss maps and several others using these new control strategies.


With the newly added duty cycle based analysis feature, the design process is significantly improved on account of being based on realistic vehicle behavior and control strategies.

The enhancements made to the modeling capabilities of permanent magnets with regards to their irreversible demagnetization behaviour and defining permanent magnets as strong or weak in Simcenter MAGNET 2020.2 also apply to Simcenter Motorsolve.

Simcenter Motorsolve is the complete design and analysis software for permanent magnet, induction, synchronous, electronically, and brush-commutated machines. It leverages the fast nature of equivalent circuits and the accuracy of FEA, with the synergy of automating the nonproductive tasks for rapid and accurate analysis of electric machines.

Our products template-based interface is easy to use and flexible enough to handle practically any motor topology, with provision for custom rotors and stators. Typical FEA operations such as mesh and solver refinements, winding design, motion, and post-processing including the export of 1D models, are not required as the software handles these for the user. Performance parameters, waveforms, and field plots are available with just a click.

As we have mentioned before, StartIsBack comes with a multitude of configuration settings; these concern the Start menu items and behavior (e.g. display My Computer as a link, hide Default Programs and Device and Printers), appearance (e.g. disable taskbar translucency, hide the Start button) and switching rules (e.g. show the desktop when logging onto the PC, switch to the last used application when clicking the Start screen).

Other options refer to uncluttering items in the Start screen (by renaming the Start screen to "Apps" and by keeping only the modern apps in that location), the advanced system commands menu (combine the Start button context menu with the one of the Start screen) and Windows tweaks (e.g. store and display recently opened programs). Furthermore, you can disable StartIsBack for the current user.

StartIsBack does not put a strain on the computer's overall performance, as it uses a pretty low amount of CPU and system memory. It is pretty responsive to key strokes and mouse commands. We have not encountered any issues throughout our testing; StartIsBack did not hang, crash or display error dialogs. Thanks to its intuitive yet rich features, the application should please users of all skill levels.
