The new Pix4Dmapper 4.5 offers survey-grade deliverables faster than ever before. The updates to our flagship software mean Pix4Dmapper 4.5 is the fastest version of Pix4Dmapper yet.

Tests performed both internally and by Puget Systems show Pix4Dmapper 4.5 can calibrate images and generate a dense point cloud on average 20% faster than the previous version.

As regular users know, processing a project in Pix4Dmapper consists of three steps. We've made some big changes to the first two.

Step 1: Initial Processing - this step calibrates the images for an optimal reconstruction. Our internal tests show that with Pix4Dmapper 4.5 this step is an average of 20% faster.

Step 2: Point cloud and mesh - creates a detailed point cloud and 3D triangulated mesh. We worked on improving the point cloud densification algorithm. One workaround for older versions of the software or slower computers is to reduce how dense the points are. However, that sacrifices quality. With the new 4.5 release, you get the same accuracy, and same high quality results while shaving up an average of 20% off the processing time.

But projects aren't individual steps. Processing a project from beginning to end - running all three processing steps and creating outputs - is an average of 15% faster with Pix4Dmapper 4.5. In our internal tests, the three processing steps for a small project with around 300 images were completed 12% faster.

At the turn of the century, Fritz fascinated the chess world with victories over Garry Kasparov and then-reigning World Champion Vladimir Kramnik. The "most popular chess program" (according to German magazine Der Spiegel) offers you everything you will need as a dedicated chess enthusiast, with innovative training methods for amateurs and professionals alike, plus access to the full suite of ChessBase web apps, including the Playchess playing server.


The neural chess engine "Fat Fritz"
In December 2017, a press release from Google shook the chess world to the core: its subsidiary Deep Mind built a neural network, dubbed Alpha Zero, which "learned" chess solely by playing millions of games against itself, yet was strong enough to beat Stockfish 8, a leading chess engine. This news was sobering and fascinating at the same time. Sobering in the sense that the decades old tradition of chess programming had been relegated to the shadows by a self-learning system. Fascinating because it was possible to hope that one could learn really new stuff about chess from this radical approach.

Nobody had expected that a cooperative effort by chess developers would soon make this technology generally available. The Open-Source- Project LCZero began to retrace the trail blazed by Google and in the meantime has acquired considerable strength. Suddenly a chess engine was available whose different analysis results provided new ideas on all fronts. LCZero too follows the Google philosophy, that the neural network only learns from games played against itself. The idea soon came to use our existing base of hundreds of thousands of good grandmaster games to shorten this learning process. This approach was followed logically by our longserving technical editor Albert Silver and based on the LCZero technology he trained a neural network for a whole year with GM games.

The result is so convincing that we are now publishing it as "Fat Fritz" along with Fritz17. As things stand, Fat Fritz defeats in a direct comparison all traditional chess programs and even LCZero. The moves suggested in analysis are often extremely human and planned. With a painfully practical limitation: Fat Fritz needs (like LCZero) a very high performance Nvidia graphics card ("GPU") in order to achieve its full playing strength. Nevertheless, here for the rst time in many years we can record a real breakthrough in chess programming. Fat Fritz and LCZero are already beginning to change opening theory.

Methodical opening training
Every average human brain is light years ahead of neural networks when it comes to mastering everyday situations. However, it is in some ways tiresome imprinting on one's own neural network knowledge about opening variations. Therefore Fritz 17 has new functions to offer to considerably simplify the constructing, administration and above all the transfer to memory of an opening repertoire. What use is the finest variation tree if one can't remember it? Fritz 17 introduces a repertoire administration which is not based on whole variations but on moves. You decide on a move: "at's the one I want to play myself " and thereupon the whole variation is taken over into your repertoire. The advantage: with some decisions and a few clicks you can set up a useable repertoire. This repertoire is online, i.e. it can be accessed immediately by any computer and on the web.

Drill and play
Once you have clicked together a repertoire in that way, the fun begins: you now learn it by drilling. To do so you play your variations and Fritz replies in such a way that, as far as possible, you remain within your repertoire. At first the moves come according to their frequency in theory. After some time it becomes clear what you have mastered properly and what not. The problematic systems are then repeated more often so that you can achieve certainty quickly with the minimum of effort. This system is known from the learning of foreign languages.

For it to be fun, Fritz measures the size of the theoretical area you have mastered and enters it into a ranking list as a number of points. Helpful for practice is also the fact that in your drilling when you reach the end of a variation you can decide if you want to carry on as a training game. Drilling can also be done with any variation tree you wish to load (traditional ChessBase repertoire), even with a sole game if you would like to learn it by heart.

Multidiscipline Integration

Electric Fields

Many types of electromagnetic devices require an electric field solution. Specifically, these are engineering problems for which the effects of magnetic fields may be ignored or should be analyzed separately.

To address this, we have added an electric field solver to Simcenter 3D Low Frequency Electromagnetics. As a result, this new simulation domain expands the supported range of applications to include insulation systems, high voltage components, surge arrestors, bus bars, cables, and many more.


Noise and Vibration

Ensuring structural integrity and evaluating the noise and vibration levels from electromagnetic sources can be difficult. Most important to note, this is a multiphysics problem which requires time domain force data.

Therefore, we have added force density and nodal force distribution calculations to identify potential "hot spots" for stress. In addition, it can help ensure structural integrity during early stages of design. (Likewise for the recently release Simcenter MAGNET and Motorsolve 2019.1)


Improving Coupled Thermal

Electromechanical components require thermal management, whether it be a passive or active cooling strategy. For instance, the ambient temperature, surrounding fluids and dissipation rate all easily influence electromagnetic performance.

As a result, failing to design with coupled electromagnetic-thermal simulations can lead to vastly inaccurate predictions and catastrophes such as demagnetization or destruction.

For this reason, the coupled electromagnetic-thermal simulations have been improved in two specific areas to provide all the analysis capabilities required to avoid such consequences:

- First, full transient electromagnetic-transient thermal FEA, in order to understand the changing performance of electromechanical devices in operation
- Second, the average rate of heat transfer between the solid surfaces and surrounding fluid can be determined

Additionally, there is a new coupled electric field-thermal simulation to study effects such as the temperature rise due to lossy dielectrics.

Faster CAE Processes

Smart Mesher Adaptivity

It's hard to have confidence in your simulation solution without a good mesh. However, identifying the areas which require a finer discretization can be difficult and a little bit tedious.

The smart mesher adaptivity now part of Simcenter 3D Low Frequency Electromagnetics can automatically identify the areas of the mesh most in need of improvement. There are two refinement options available to select from:

- increasing the number of elements
- increasing the polynomial order

Thorough Control with Object-Level Parameters

Moving from initial concept to final high fidelity design verification is a multi-step process. Moreover, each step on the path might require examining different critical performance criteria and replicating changing or different operating conditions. Or it may also include making miniscule to drastic changes to the model and excitation.

Object-level parameters allow for these diverse requirements to be explored by giving the user control to specify conditions, such as:

- Which hysteresis method to utilize
- Include or omit eddy currents
- Include or omit remagnetization and demagnetization of permanent magnets
- Average power loss start and end time
- Mesh polynomial order

Simcenter 3D Low Frequency EM is designed for solving low frequency electromagnetic (EM) problems that can involve static magnetic fields, time-varying fields and eddy-currents, and transient conditions with motion of parts of the device. In addition to these analyses, an option is available for providing static or transient coupled thermal solutions of EM problems. Many devices can be represented very well by 2D models, with a substantial saving in computing resources and solution time.

Simcenter 3D Low Frequency EM provides a "virtual laboratory" in which a user can create models from magnetic materials and coils, view displays in the form of field plots and graphs, and get numerical values for quantities such as flux linkage and force.

A feature of Simcenter 3D Low Frequency EM is its use of the latest methods of solving the field equations and calculating quantities such as force and torque. To get reliable results, the user does not need to be an expert in electromagnetic theory or numerical analysis. Nevertheless, the user does need to be aware of the factors that govern the accuracy of the solution.

You can now choose between rounded and original (sharp corner) offsets while offsetting solid edges using the Offset Solid Edges tool.

Clash Detection Enhancement

Define Jobs on Levels in Nested References
You can now view levels in nested references in Clash Detection dialog > Criteria tab > Levels drop-down. You can also define jobs in levels of nested references.

Productivity Enhancements

Hide Thumbnail Preview for Files on the Work Page
You can now disable thumbnail preview for the list of files displayed on the Work Page for faster navigation to the backstage. You can do so, by turning on the Hide Thumbnail Preview setting in the Preferences Dialog, Look and Feel category. (Settings > User > Preferences > Preferences Dialog > Look and Feel category) The default setting is Off.

Access to Help in the Top-Right section of the Ribbon
You can now access Help from the help icon in the top right corner of the Ribbon, next to the CONNECTION Client sign-in icon.

Fix Direction of Hatch
You can now fix the hatch pattern orientation of the reference to a view by setting the value for MS_PATTERNORIENTATION_ROTATEWITHVIEW to 0.

You can now use the iTwin Synchronizer to synchronize changes in a design file to an iModel in the iModelHub. This iModel can be accessed and reviewed by your team members from anywhere. The iTwin Synchronizer is a cloud-based design collaboration tool.

Add or Remove an Element to Named Presentation(s) in the Properties Dialog
You can now control the inclusion of an element in Named Presentations from the properties dialog. You can set the value to True or False in the Named Presentation section of the properties dialog to add or remove a selected element from named presentation.

Create Text Favorites with Item Type Properties
You can now associate Item Types in the field type while creating or managing a text favorite in the Text Favorite Manager dialog.

V8i Task Theme in the Quick Access Toolbar
You can now access the V8i Task theme and its various styles from the V8i button next to the Workflow drop down menu in the Quick Access Toolbar. It is no longer constrained to the Task Navigation workflow.

The minimum recommended workstation profile for running MicroStation CONNECT Edition is:

Processor Intel or AMD processor 1.0 GHz or greater. MicroStation is not supported on a CPU that does not support SSE2.
Memory 4 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended. More memory almost always improves performance, particularly when working with larger models.
Hard Disk 25 GB minimum, 40 GB depending on additional installations such as Companion Features and Companion Products
Video See the graphics card manufacturer for latest information on DirectX drivers. 512 MB of video RAM or higher is recommended. If insufficient video RAM or no graphics card supported by DirectX can be found, MicroStation attempts to use software emulation. For optimal performance, graphics display color depth should be set to 24-bit or higher. When using a color depth setting of 16-bit, some inconsistencies will be noted.
