What's New?
This section provides a list of new features in Bentley OpenSite, OpenRoads, and OpenRail Designer CONNECT Edition products, also referred to as OpenX Designer products. Features that are only available in specific products are appropriately noted as such.

General
- Enhanced the file opening behavior to prompt user if the dgn needs to be upgraded from an earlier version of software or from a different product such as OpenRoads to OpenRail. Previously the dgn was automatically upgraded from earlier versions of software without prompting. If the option to upgrade is accepted, a backup of the original file is created in the file's directory. The prompting can be hidden, and files automatically upgraded or automatically opened read only the configuration variables CIVIL_UPGRADE_PROMPT_OFF and CIVIL_OPEN_OLD_READONLY.
- Enhanced the Training-Imperial and Training-Metric WorkSets to look for civil cells in the same folder as the active dgn.
- Enhanced the t-intersection civil cells with a new clipping reference and naming convention.
- Fixed the Viewset mvba to not crash in certain situation.
- Added a new configuration variable CIVIL_ROADWAY_TEMPLATE_LIBRARY_SAVEAS to define the default folder for the Template Library Save-As command. If this variable is not defined, the Save-As command defaults to the location defined by the CIVIL_ROADWAY_TEMPLATE_LIBRARY variable.
- Added a new configuration variable CIVIL_SURVEY_PHOTOS_FOLDER to define the path where images files are located for a survey fieldbook.
- Fixed the Asset Manager and Materials files in example Metric Workspace to use metric units.
- Fixed the Drawing Workflow ribbon menu to match MicroStation. This fixes an issue with customizations to this Drawing Workflow appearing in MicroStation but not in OpenX products.
- Fixed an issue with some expressions not being imported correctly from Asset Manager spreadsheets.
- Enhanced the Asset Manager tool with the ability to report station and offset of 3D mesh elements.
- Fixed the Quick Properties to maintain changes for level, color, line style, and weight.
Survey
- Added the ability to change the Combined Scale Factor options before import.

- Added the ability to zoom to the location of the element by double click the message in the Survey Details > Message Center.

Geometry
- Enhanced the Horizontal and Vertical Table editor to display Design Speed when a Design Standard is assigned.

- Fixed an issue in processing large corridors with Project Explorer open.
- Fixed an issue where superelevation calculation was not using the correct length from Speed Tables in some situations when the Interpolate Tables option was disabled.
- Fixed superelevation calculations when compound curves are used.
- Fixed a crash when deleting tables while using the Edit Superelevation Rules tool.
- Fixed an issue with the Custom volume option when set to split. It was incorrectly including the remove and replace with general cut; thus the value was double calculated.
- Enhanced the Custom volume option with a property that defines if it will be included or excluded from mass ordinate.
- Fixed an issue causing the Create Cut Fill tool to not compute beginning/ending sections on specific data sets.

Drawing Production and Annotation
- Fixed issue with Plan named boundary overlap computation values not being read correctly from sheet seed dgnlibs when using sheet overlaps.
- Fixed issue where dgnlibs that contained Annotation Definitions that used In Vertical Component were incorrectly interpreted as Event Point List for Location.
- Fixed issue where turnout points were not annotated with the Annotate Element tool.
- Added capability to define a text favorite to place the horizontal alignment name in profile drawing models.
- Fixed the Civil Feature Description text field. Previously this text field returned a blank, not the description.
- Fixed an issue with Display Overrides causing a crash.
- Fixed an issue where the left and right side options were not placing the annotation at the edge of the border when using a text favorite.
- Fixed a crash when panning the view while running Adjust Profile Named Boundary tool.
- Fixed an issue causing existing ground strip grades to be annotated incorrectly when the vertical geometry begins at a different station than the horizontal geometry
- Fixed the annotation manager preview window to show the correct values for offsets and elevations.
- Fixed modifying levels of a 3D Cut in profile where off by element or level display can be used in conjunction with Refresh 3D Cut.
- Fixed a crash when opening profile model after removing and creating sheets.
- Enhanced the Annotate Model tool to annotate the proposed profile all drawing models.
- Fixed an issue with profile drawing models so they no longer reannotate on entry when the geometry is in reference file.
- Added a new capability to draw cross sections looking down station 'backward facing' as opposed to the default looking up station.
Drainage and Utilities
- Added support for OpenFlows Tap and Property Connection types in the Structure Type property of a node feature definition.
- Fixed several issues with manipulators for nodes and conduits in a profile model. Note that the Set Invert to Start / Stop properties on a conduit, if set to True, will cause the related invert manipulator to be read-only. Also, the File > Settings > User > Preferences > View Options - Civil > dialog now includes an option to "Show OpenFlows Calculated Slope, in the Drainage and Utilities category. This will cause the conduit slope manipulator to use the OpenFlows slope, which is measured using the center to center length of the conduit, instead of the exact (i.e. clipped) length. Note that the OpenFlows slope is a read-only value.
- Fixed a crash when deleting a delineated catchment, if the catchment is connected to a node and the node is deleted before the conduit.
- Fixed an issue loading data when a link does not have a start and / or stop node.
- Added a new dialog that displays the links with missing nodes in each database and allows you to delete some, or all, of the links. The key in for this is SUBSURFACE OPENLINKSMISSINGNODESDIALOG.
- Added the ability to use the local design constraint for a conduit, instead of the default design constraint. This lets you override default values such as the depth of cover, minimum velocity, etc., which can be helpful if the conduit is modelling an open section such as a ditch.
- Enhanced the catchment acreage to update when the catchment area is modified.
- Fixed the Update Standards from dgnlib tool to correctly synchronize drainage and utilities standards. This means that the properties for a prototype and associated catalog that are used by a feature definition in the DGN will be updated from the dgnliib.

FEMAP 2021.1 New Features and Corrections

Connection Properties, Regions, and Connectors
- Added Check for Connection to Internal Edges option to Connect, Automatic command, which is only available when Edge - Edge is enabled in the Connection Types section of the Auto Detection Options for Connections dialog box. When enabled, allows connections to be automatically created between any combination of free edges an internal edges (i.e., non-free edges) of surfaces (sheet solids), solids, and general bodies which are considered coincident based on the value specified for Tolerance in the Detection Options section. If disabled, which is the default, no connections will be made between any edge and any internal edge.
- Added Surfaces to the Output section for Connection Regions. Only available when Defined By is set to Surfaces and currently only used by MSC Nastran.
- Updated the Connection Region Options dialog box to have three tabs: Simcenter Nastran, MSC Nastran, and ABAQUS. The options on the Simcenter Nastran and ABAQUS tabs were available in previous versions of FEMAP, but all of the options on the MSC Nastran tab other than Friction Value (FRIC) are new for 2021.1.
- Added Norm Scale Fac (SFNPNLT) and Tang Scale Fac (SFTPNLT) options to Contact section of MSC Nastran Advanced Contact Options dialog box accessed by the Advanced Options button on the MSC Nastran tab.
- Added Cohesive Options button to Glue Break section of MSC Nastran Advanced Contact Options dialog box accessed by the Advanced Options button on the MSC Nastran tab.

Performance Graphics
- Added support for RBE1 elements when using Best Available or Performance Graphics.
User Interface - General
- Added functionality to hide the list of entity ranges in the standard selection dialog box to improve performance when more than 1000 unique ID ranges have been selected. Once more then 1000 "unique ID ranges" are selected, the list of selected entities is replaced by text stating "(number of unique ranges) Ranges Selected" and "Show List>>>". To display the entire list of ranges, click anywhere in the list area. To hide the list again, click the Hide List button which appears to the left of the list area.
- Added the Match Color^ button menu to the Color Palette, which selects a color by matching the color of an existing entity.
- Improved handling of "repeated error messages" to catch cases where multiple errors were repeated in a pattern. This can dramatically improve import times of invalid or incomplete Nastran models.
- Enhanced performance of picking, especially front picking (up to 15 times faster) and area picking (up to 10 times faster), when using the New Picking option on the Graphics tab in the Preferences dialog box. New picking also takes advantage of OpenMP technology.

Mesh Control Explorer - New for 2021.1!
- Added Mesh Control Explorer to perform a number of different tasks, including specification of options for mesh propagation, visualization of slaved surfaces for solid meshing and/or mesh approaches on surfaces, and determining if curves are paired by a mesh approach and/or can be automatically paired based on proximity when mesh sizing.
Meshing Toolbox - Overall
- Added icon to open the Mesh Control Explorer dockable pane from within the Meshing Toolbox.
Meshing Toolbox - Mesh Sizing tool
- Added ability to update hex mesh on multiple solids by selecting a single curve and having the mesh propagate correctly through all required solids. Previously, if all curves required to update the hex mesh were not selected, hex meshing would fail.
Meshing Toolbox - Mesh Surface tool
- Added ability to update hex mesh on multiple solids by changing the surface mesh on a single surface and having the mesh propagate correctly through all required solids.
Function/Table Editor
- Added Connect To Excel command which is only available after the Send To Excel command on the Copy to Clipboard menu has been used to send data to Excel. Connect to Excel opens the Excel Connection dialog box. When the Live option is enabled, any additions and modifications done in Excel are automatically reflected in the Function/Table Editor. If the Live option is disabled, then additions and modifications can be committed to the Function/Table Editor by using the Update button.

Interfaces - MSC Nastran

SOL 400 Overview
- Added support for Analysis Type "30..Implicit Nonlinear", which is used to setup analysis jobs using SOL 400. To support SOL 400, new dialog boxes have been created in the Analysis Set Manager to enter options for Nonlinear Behavior (Nonlinear Behavior Options), Automatic Contact Parameters (Automatic Contact Generation), and Control Parameters (NASTRAN Implicit Nonlinear Analysis). In addition, new options were added to Contact Parameters (MSC Nastran Contact Solver Parameters). Finally, two new entity types, Analysis Step (Analysis Step dialog box) and Global Step (Global Analysis Steps dialog box), have been created to perform analysis chaining within a particular subcase.
SOL 400 Elements
- Added read/write support for CIFHEX and CIFPENT (Solid Interface Cohesive Zone Modeling Elements) entries.
SOL 400 Materials

Properties
- Added Define Property Extensions icon button to the Define Property dialog boxes for a number of different property types. When clicked, the Property Extensions dialog box is displayed, which allows specification of solver-specific items for the current property type. The options available change from property type-to-property type. The "Filter" icon button can be used to limit the tabs which are displayed in the Property Extensions dialog box.
Loads and Boundary Conditions
- Added Equation Coord Sys drop-down to Create Loads dialog box for Model, Load, Nodal; Model, Load, Nodal on Face; Model, Load, Elemental; and Model, Load, Elemental on Face command. The Equation Coord Sys drop-down can be used to specify the coordinate system in which equations are evaluated when defining nodal or elemental loads when Method is set to Variable. By default, this option is set to the active coordinate system in the model, not to match the Definition Coord Sys.
Meshing
- Added a Size Propagation section to the dialog box for the Mesh, Mesh Control, Size on Curve; Mesh, Mesh Control, Size on Surface; and Mesh, Mesh Control, Size on Solid commands. In each command, there is Propagate Sizing option and an icon button which accesses the Mesh Sizing Propagation Options dialog box. The Propagate Sizing option can also be enabled and the other options specified via the Mesh Control Explorer dockable pane, which was added for 2021.1.
- Added Detect Surface Poles option to "Mapped" approaches in the Surface Mesh Approach dialog box. When enabled, the location of "surface poles" will be detected and the selected points may be reordered to create a higher-quality mesh. When disabled, the points are always used as entered.
Listing
- Added Evaluate Group to insure Entity Selection is valid option to List, Groups command. This option is on by default, but only used when the List Entities in Group option is enabled. Simply performs the Group, Operations, Evaluate command on all selected groups before listing the entities in each group.
Output and Post-Processing
- Added Linear and Parabolic Types option to Contour Options dialog box, which controls if averaging of results occurs across boundaries between linear and parabolic solid elements.
Tools
- Added Interference Factor/Proximity Factor option to the Tools, Check, Mesh Interference command. In addition, consolidated the user interface to use a single dialog box instead of a series of questions. When Interference Factor is selected in the Checking Options section, an element has to overlap at least one other element by more than the specified value for the elements to be considered interfering. When Proximity Factor is selected, it acts in an opposite manner to Interference Factor, meaning if a gap smaller than the specified value exists between and element and any other element, those elements are considered interfering.

Preferences

Graphics
- Added New Picking to Graphics Options section. When enabled, which is the default, New Picking uses new picking introduced in version 2021.1 which takes advantage of "Open MP" to improve performance when selecting a large number of entities from the graphics window, especially when using area picking (Box, Circle, Polygon, or Freehand) and/or Front Pick. Unless there is a problem picking entities, New Picking should remain enabled. Fast Picking uses older picking methods, but for the time being should also remain enabled. Eventually, New Picking will become the only available option and these preferences will be removed.
- Updated OpenMP in the Advanced/Debug Options section.to be enabled by default. In addition, now set a default value of "4" for Number of Threads. This functionality has been implemented to improve performance for a limited number of commands and operations including: New Picking; View, Advanced Post, Dynamic IsoSurface; View, Advanced Post, Dynamic Cutting Plane; and placing a contour on certain types of entities. Note: If any issues are encountered when using these options, please disable this option, then contact Customer Support to describe the issue.
Interfaces
- Added Enable Analysis Filtering option and Select Analysis Filters icon button, which accesses the Select Solvers to Filter dialog box. When enabled, this option is used in conjunction with the solvers selected using the Select Analysis Filters icon button to limit solver-specific options found in various locations throughout FEMAP, including dialog boxes and dockable panes. Solvers which can be filtered are MSC Nastran, Autodesk Nastran, LS-DYNA, ABAQUS, ANSYS, SINDA, and MARC. For Simcenter Nastran, certain analysis types can be filtered, including Linear (Contact options including glued contact for most solution sequences), Multistep Structural (SOL 401), Multistep Kinematic (SOL 402), Advanced Nonlinear (SOL 601), and/or Explicit (SOL 701).

Simcenter Femap software is a standalone finite element modeling (FEM) pre- and postprocessor for engineering simulation and analysis. The software is computer-aided design (CAD) independent and can import geometry from all major CAD platforms. It supports most CAD data formats. Simcenter Femap also works in combination with a wide variety of FEA solvers, including Simcenter Nastran® software.

Simcenter Femap, which is part of the Xcelerator portfolio, the comprehensive and integrated portfolio of software and services from Siemens Digital Industries Software, is now being released on a biannual schedule in the spring and the fall, which began with version 2019.1 and continues with version 2021.1. The software is now referred to as Simcenter Femap to reflect that it is a part of the Simcenter portfolio of Siemens computer-aided engineering (CAE) products. For the same reason, NX Nastran software is now Simcenter Nastran software.

The latest release provides a variety of enhancements that will improve your productivity across the simulation workflow. A large amount of functionality added to 2021.1 focuses on facilitating mesh creation and modification. First, matching mesh sizes and determining mesh propagation between disconnected geometric entities can be specified based on the proximity of edge curves to one another. To determine where these mesh propagation options will be enforced, tools were created in the new mesh control explorer pane to provide visual feedback for edge curves, which are fully paired, partially paired or unpaired, along with other tools to visualize which surfaces are paired for solid meshing or have a surface mesh approach assigned. In addition, multiple tools in the meshing toolbox can be used to update an existing hex mesh. Another area of expanded capabilities is support for MSC Nastran SOL 400. From a modeling standpoint, items have been added to specify property extensions, nonlinear materials and contact options designed for use with SOL 400. At the same time, a new analysis type may be selected that offers user interface (UI) elements to define critical and useful solver parameters for SOL 400. Finally, updates have also been implemented for Simcenter Nastran and Abaqus.

Welcome to FEMAP! This document will help you to setup your computer so that you can immediately begin to explore the many capabilities of FEMAP.

This document contains information specific to getting started on a PC, which includes 64-bit versions for Windows 7, Win-dows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.

The FEMAP installer contains only the 64-bit version of FEMAP, as a 32-bit version is no longer available.

Hardware/Software Requirements
There are no special hardware/software requirements for FEMAP beyond those imposed by the Windows operating systems. There are many types of hardware that will allow you to use FEMAP. Proper choice of hardware, however, can often make the difference between frustration and productivity. Here are a few suggestions:

- Memory, RAM
- Memory, (Hard Disk)
- Graphics Boards

Memory, RAM
You will need at least 128 Mbytes of RAM to run FEMAP and the Parasolid solid modeling engine, which is the default. Obviously, the more amount of RAM the better. Adding RAM can be one of the most cost effective means of increasing per-formance.If using the "Standard" geometry Engine in FEMAP, you can actually run with as little as 32 Mbytes of RAM. This is not a recommended configuration.

Memory, (Hard Disk)
Required hard disk space is very difficult to estimate, but in general you will never have enough. Analysis results will be the main driver of any disk space requirement. Models are typically relatively small. A model with 1000 nodes and 1000 ele-ments would typically be less than 1 Mbyte in size. Output from an analysis of that model, however, could be 5 Mbytes, 10 Mbytes or even larger, depending on the output you request. To estimate total disk space, you need to first estimate how many models you will have on-line simultaneously, the approximate size of those models, and the type of output you will request. It is recommend to have as much disk space as budget will allow, as each version of FEMAP can support larger and larger models, which in turn create larger and larger amounts of output.

Graphics Boards
While, standard graphics adapters may work very well with FEMAP, having a specialized board with support for OpenGL will provide increased graphical performance when dynamically rotating large, complex models. They also usually provide higher resolution and more colors, which make graphics easier to see and more realistic. Also, in order to use the "Perfor-mance Graphics" option, a graphics card which supports OpenGL 4.2 is required.
