Outer Space is a faithful emulation plugin of a famous vintage tape echo made in the early seventies. As the original unit, Outer Space features a tape echo section with three playback heads and a spring reverb tank.

We have modelled three different tape frequency responses and saturations, along with all the analog imperfections of tape recording/playback. We've also modelled the ballistic response of the delay rate (repeat rate) which can create eerie pitch shifts (due to the Doppler effect), one of the classic tape echo-based sound effects

Just like the original unit, with the Mode selector you can choose 12 different combinations of echo playback heads and reverb (4 Echo only, 7 Echo+Reverb, 1 Reverb only). We've modelled three different tape types. The original RT-1L, a more modern replacement, and an older worn out tape. Each tape will affect the sound in a subtle but different way, especially at higher feedback (Intensity) settings. WOW/Flutter will also change according to the selected tape, creating different amount of pitch and volume nonlinearities. Changing the speed of the repetitions (Repeat Rate) will also affect the tape frequency response.

AudioThing Reels v1.1.0 WiN | 27 Mb

Reels is a tape emulation plugin with built-in echo section and tape-stop effect. Based on an old Japanese portable tape recorder with a very distinct Lo-Fi analog sound, Reels emulates all the imperfections of consumer reel-to-reel recorders. We have modeled three different 1/4" tape frequency responses and saturations, along with all the analog imperfections of tape recording / playback. Reels will add a very rough retro analog sound to your mixes. If you are looking for a Hi-Fi mastering tape emulation, this is not the plugin for you!

Reels is based on a vintage Japanese reel to reel, ironically marked as High Fidelity, found in a distressed state at a local flea market. Most of these consumer tape recorders, also due to their age, produce has a very rough Lo-Fi analog sound. During recording or playback, the motor noise somehow bleeds in, along with the usual tape hiss, limiting the actual bandwidth available on the tape. Reels recreates all the imperfection of consumer reel-to-reel vintage recorders, including:

Harshness, harmonic distortion with loss of clarity (mid-range)
WOW/Flutter, pitch instabilities due to recording and playback issues
Ducking, random volume loss due to tape or rec/play head imperfections
Crosstalk, the leak between left and right channel in a stereo signal
Hiss, high-frequency noise caused by the magnetic particles in the tape
Motor, mid-frequency noise caused by the reels motor

AudioThing Springs v1.1.5 WiN | 26 Mb

Springs is a plugin which features a collection of vintage spring reverbs paired with an authentic Baxandall EQ emulation. Springs features emulations from 9 types of spring reverbs, ranging from a long 6-spring pipe to a tiny battery-powered single-spring unit. We have used a combination of convolution and modelling to recreate the vintage character of each reverb.

Spring reverbs were usually paired with tone stacks from guitar amplifiers. Springs features one of the most iconic and unique sounding tone stack equalizers: the Baxandall EQ. A classic Baxandall tone stack usually features just the bass and treble bands, but we have also added a Mid band (with control over the Q).

SPRING REVERBS
We have collected and emulated several spring reverbs. Each one with its own sound.

BAXANDALL EQ
The Baxandall EQ is a classic type of EQ, mostly found in guitar amps, and usually limited to just a single tone control or two bands (bass and treble). We have added a third band (mid with Q control) to shape the reverb sound further. One important characteristic of the Baxandall EQ is that the bands interact with each other. This may seem like an unwanted behavior, but it's one of the reasons why the Baxandall EQ curves are smooth and musical.

EDITOR
By clicking on the wrench tool button you can open the editor window. Springs uses a combination of convolution and modeling to recreate each spring reverb. With the editor you can edit the impulse response of the reverb directly. This can be useful to fine-tune the size/decay of the reverb, but can also be used to completely mangle the source (check the experimental presets).

BANDWIDTH
While with the Baxandall EQ you can shape the sound of the mix (dry+wet) or just the wet signal, with the Bandwidth control you can filter the input signal that goes into the spring emulation. Some springs have a boomy low end, some are too bright and boingy. By limiting the bandwidth of the signal you can dampen these characteristics.

Type A is a plugin inspired by a famous vintage tape encoder. The original unit was designed to be a noise reduction system for tape recording (encode stage) and playback (decode stage). Type A emulates the encode stage, which was often misused as an enhancer, dynamically increasing the top end of a signal without introducing artefacts or altering the harmonic content. The results are similar to a dynamic EQ which adds presence and air to any track in a natural way.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
To limit the amount of noise generated by tape recording, early noise reduction systems used what's called a multi-band compander (compressor/expander). The unit dynamically emphasises the high frequencies during the encoding stage (recording to tape), so that during the decoding stage (playback from tape) the signal is attenuated, along with the typical tape noise. Type A emulates the encoding stage only. The input signal is split into 4 bands (with the highest bands overlapping), dynamically compressed and then summed back with the dry signal. The amount of compression on each band is inversely proportional to the volume of the band. Quieter sounds get brighter while louder sounds remain almost unchanged. This adds brightness and air without generating any new harmonic content or distortion, resulting in a more pleasant and natural enhancer compared to a typical exciter.

NOISE REDUCTION OR ENHANCER?
Introduced in 1966 with the Dolby A301 first, and then in 1970 with the Dolby 361 (with the CAT 22 card, in photos), the A-Type noise reduction was quickly misused and modded by engineers to enhance their recordings by using the encoding stage only. The most common mod consists in disabling the two lower bands so that only the high-frequency portion of the signal is compressed, giving even more air to vocals. This technique was labeled with many names like the Vocal Trick, Stretch Mod, Vocal Stressor, and even the "John Lennon mod".

IBM® APL2® is a programming language for users and developers. Application encapsulation and reuse
The support for namespaces on workstations makes feasible development and testing of applications for deployment as mainframe namespaces with reduced name conflicts.

Parallel processing
Tools are provided for distributing applications onto multiple cores and machines.
