Popularized by movies such as "A Beautiful Mind," game theory is the mathematical modeling of strategic interaction among rational (and irrational) agents. Beyond what we call `games' in common language, such as chess, poker, soccer, etc., it includes the modeling of conflict among nations, political campaigns, competition among firms, and trading behavior in markets such as the NYSE.

How could you begin to model keyword auctions, and peer to peer file-sharing networks, without accounting for the incentives of the people using them? The course will provide the basics: representing games and strategies, the extensive form (which computer scientists call game trees), Bayesian games (modeling things like auctions), repeated and stochastic games, and more. We'll include a variety of examples including classic games and a few applications.

Requirements/Prerequisites

You must be comfortable with mathematical thinking and rigorous arguments. Relatively little specific math is required; you should be familiar with basic probability theory (for example, you should know what a conditional probability is), and some very light calculus would be helpful.

Course Structure

The course consists of the following materials:

Videos. The lectures are delivered via videos, which are broken into small chunks, usually between five and fifteen minutes each. There will be about an hour and a half of video content per week. You may watch the lecture videos at your convenience. Lower-resolution videos are also available for those with slow internet connections. You can also find the videos on : our youtube channel
Slides. We have made available pdf files of all the lecture slides.
Ungraded Practice Quizzes. There will be non-graded short "quiz" questions that will follow some of the videos to help you gauge your understanding.
Online Lab Exercises. After some of the videos, we will ask you to go online to a specific url (that will be provided to you at that point) to play some games. These are entirely optional, and designed to illustrate some of the concepts from the course.
Graded Problem Sets. There will also be graded weekly problem sets that you will also answer online, but may work through offline . You may discuss problems from the problem sets with other students in an online forum, without providing explicit answers.
Final Exam. There will be an online final exam.

The following background readings provide more detailed coverage of the course material:

Essentials of Game Theory, by Kevin Leyton-Brown and Yoav Shoham; Morgan and Claypool Publishers, 2008. This book has the same structure as the course, and covers most of the same material. Grading

Your grade in the course will be based solely on the problem sets (70 percent of your grade) and the final exam (30 percent of your grade).

You are free to follow the course without completing the problem sets or final, but then will not receive a certificate of completion.

Questions

If you have any questions, please do not contact the professors directly, as with over one hundred thousand of students it is infeasible for us to respond. The course includes on-line Q&A forums where students can post and respond to questions. This will go live in parallel with the first lectures. Students rank questions and answers, so that the most important questions and the best answers bubble to the top. TAs and the professors will periodically monitor these forums, so that important questions not answered by other students will be addressed.

About the Instructor

Michael Genesereth is an associate professor in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University. He has been teaching Logic to Stanford students and others for more than 20 years. He is the current director of the Logic Group at Stanford and founder and research director of CodeX (The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics).

This course will introduce you to some of the main areas of research in contemporary philosophy. Each module a different philosopher will talk you through some of the most important questions and issues in their area of expertise. We'll begin by trying to understand what philosophy is - what are its characteristic aims and methods, and how does it differ from other subjects? Then we'll spend the rest of the course gaining an introductory overview of several different areas of philosophy.

Topics you'll learn about will include:

Epistemology, where we'll consider what our knowledge of the world and ourselves consists in, and how we come to have it;

Philosophy of science, where we'll investigate foundational conceptual issues in scientific research and practice;

Philosophy of Mind, where we'll ask questions about what it means for something to have a mind, and how minds should be understood and explained;

Political Philosophy, where we'll investigate whether we have an obligation to obey the law;

Moral Philosophy, where we'll attempt to understand the nature of our moral judgements and reactions - whether they aim at some objective moral truth, or are mere personal or cultural preferences, and;

Metaphysics, where we'll think through some fundamental conceptual questions about free will and the nature of reality.

The development of this MOOC has been led by the University of Edinburgh's Eidyn research centre.

This course is about the quantum mechanics of light. Classically, light consists of electromagnetic waves, which are fully described by Maxwell's equations. On the quantum level, however, this description has to be extended to introduce the concept of the photon.

Quantum Optics is about how light is described in terms of photons, and how the interaction of photons with matter such as atoms can be understood. We will see that, on the one hand, things that we take as a given in a classical description can be naturally derived in the quantum optical context from fundamental principles. On the other hand, the quantum descriptions allows for novel types of light with properties that can not occur with a purely classical description.

Quantum optics also predicts some very counter-intuitive effects such as an optical coupling to empty vacuum - which can be experimentally tested and have actually been confirmed in laboratories around the world!

Nanotechnology is an emerging area that engages almost every technical discipline - from chemistry to computer science - in the study and application of extremely tiny materials. This short course allows any technically savvy person to go one layer beyond the surface of this broad topic to see the real substance behind the very small.

Nanotechnology is an exciting research area that spans disciplines from electrical engineering to biology. Over the last two decades the basic science of this area has launched new technologies, the first examples of which are finding their way into commercial products. This four week course will provide students with a bird's eye view into this fast moving area and leave students with an appreciation of the importance and foundation of super-small materials and devices.

Week 1: Small, strange and useful! This first week we will introduce nanotechnology. As you will learn, defining the term itself can be a challenge and the discipline has a rich and somewhat controversial history. We will conclude the week with a tour of the different types of materials in the nanotechnology pantheon that sets up the class for the weeks to come.

Week 2: Electronics when materials are super small. There is no doubt our lives have been changed by the small and powerful computers we now use in everything from our cell phones to our coffeemakers. This week you will learn how nanotechnology has been a part of this revolution and what the limits are to making wires and transistors super, super small.

Week 3: How magnets change when they are made small. Magnetism is quite mysterious and the foundation of such cool technologies as flash drives and MRI imaging. Nanotechnology has played a crucial role in advancing all of these diverse applications and in week 3 you'll gain some insight into how that is possible.

Week 4: Shedding light on nanoscale materials and photonics. Compared to electrons, photons are difficult things to trap and control with normal materials. Nanomaterials offer completely new approaches to manipulating light. Whether its through diffraction, or plasmonics, nanotechnology can provide new capabilities for solid state lasers as well as super resolution microscopes.
