ANSYS Electronics Desktop is a comprehensive platform that enables electrical engineers to design and simulate various electrical, electronic and electromagnetic components, devices and systems. It is a unified interface which creates and analyzes electromagnetic (EM), thermal and circuit designs.

Engineers can access gold-standard tools such as ANSYS HFSS, ANSYS Maxwell, ANSYS Q3D Extractor and ANSYS Icepak using electrical CAD (ECAD) and mechanical CAD (MCAD) workflows. In addition, the Electronics Desktop includes direct links to the full ANSYS portfolio of thermal, fluid and mechanical solvers for comprehensive multiphysics analyses.

Engineers can integrate rigorous 2D and 3D physics analyses with system and circuit simulations, all inside a single framework called ANSYS Electronics Desktop. Any combination of products within the Electronics Desktop can be inserted into a single project. For instance, you can combine disparate design types such as HFSS, Circuit and Icepak into a single project. Schematics can be used to wire up different field solver models and create a model of a high-level system through dynamic links that combine 3D EM and SPICE circuit analyses.

Engineers can efficiently manage complex projects that require several different analysis tools to predict the operation of their electronic products. Designs can also be parameterized. With Optimetrics, design variations can be studied and made available to other modules when the designs are included in a higher-level simulation. This allows engineers to conduct what-if experiments and study the effects of component design parameter variations on the behavior of the entire system.

National Instruments (NI), is pleased to announce the availability of FlexLogger 2020 R3 is application software for quick sensor configuration and data logging of mixed signals to verify electromechanical systems, all without programming.

New Features

2020 R3 (June 2020)
- Improved shunt calibration feedback, including calculated values displayed in channel details and error messaging
- Scan for TEDS sensors at the project level
- Added support for resistance measurements. Refer to the Supported Hardware section for specific model support information.
- Support for LabVIEW 2020 in the FlexLogger Plugin Development Kit 1.3
- (Preview Feature) Publish tags and files to a connected SystemLink Server. This preview features requires a seperate license for SystemLink Server.
The following items are notable issues fixed between the release of FlexLogger 2020 R2 and FlexLogger 2020 R3, including additional patches and service packs.

1035075 - Decimal Value Can Cause Errors in Plugins on Systems with Certain Regional and Language Settings
On systems with regional/language settings that use "," as the decimal, entering values with "," for plugin channels with result in an error.
Workaround: Use a language/regional setting that uses "." as the decimal.

1043153 - Scan for TEDS on unconnected channel can pull stale TEDS data from NI MAX
Scan for TEDS on unconnected channels can reference stale TEDS data from NI MAX.
Workaround: Remove TEDS info from NI MAX. Then, re-scan in FlexLogger.

1065421 - Disabled Plugin Channel Can Lead to Misorder of Channels
Disabling plugin channels can lead to plugin channels being out of order. Logging and calculated channels could refer to the incorrect channels.
Workaround: Avoid disabling plugin channels before starting a test.
FlexLogger helps validate new and rapidly evolving technologies to keep pace with vehicle electrification and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), without programming, the company said. FlexLogger provides intuitive workflows and integrated data management to help automotive test departments quickly capture accurate, well-documented data to verify system functionality in real-world conditions and comply with strict government regulations.

Technology innovations in the areas of active safety, electrification and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication are disrupting how the automotive industry designs, tests and produces vehicles, noted NI. It said rapidly-evolving components and systems including sensor fusion, high-capacity batteries and Deep Learning demand higher volume of testing with accurate, traceable results to exceed safety-critical expectations for quality and reliability. These trends are intensifying the challenges to automotive test departments to build increasingly complex, mixed-measurement test systems under compressed timelines, while managing the explosive growth of collected data, NI added.

FlexLogger can be used by engineers to help simplify test configurations and extract key insights with sensor-specific workflows to acquire and log synchronised, mixed measurements, without any programming, explained NI. Analogue sensors, digital pulse frequencies, CAN signals and calculated channels that are all logged to the universal Technical Data Management Streaming (TDMS) file format can be integrated quickly. This leads to the capability of data being correlated and analysed to accurately characterise an entire system. These capabilities also address similar challenges faced by test departments in other industries including heavy equipment, aerospace, appliances and academic research, the company said.

NI said that these configuration-based workflows are the cornerstone that now empowers technicians to streamline test development, integrate new measurements and manage data using its flexible software platform and modular hardware. FlexLogger automatically logs descriptive metadata about the test configuration, including sensor and hardware acquisition settings for easier traceability. Test departments can improve access to data and effectively communicate results to the organisation using DIAdem data management software to find, analyse and report on FlexLogger data, it added.

The Hydraulics and Hydrology development team is pleased to announce the availability of CivilStorm CONNECT Edition Update 3 (version 10.03.01.08). This release introduces improvements and features to help you be more successful.

Enhancements to Critical Storm Analysis Tool

The workflow for the Critical Storm Analysis wizard has been adjusted to make it easier to use and reduce the number of scenarios, alternatives, and calculations. The user workflow takes advantage of existing tools, like prototypes and the New Scenario wizard to decrease the time it takes to run the Critical Storm Analysis and the dramatically lower the number of scenarios created. For more information on usage and workflow, please review the Critical Storm Analysis section of the Help documentation.

Profiles Included in Custom Reports

Profiles can now be added to Custom Reports. This will improve the appearance and make your reports more complete.

To add a profile, you would first follow the typical workflow of adding a scenario and selection set. Next, either right-click on the scenario from the tree-form or click the New Sections button, then choose Profile. You will choose an existing profile and the profile type (Analysis Profile or Engineering Profile). The profile will then be included in the custom report.


Support for EPA-SWMM Numerical Solver version 5.1.014

The Explicit (SWMM) solver (available in SewerGEMS and CivilStorm) now uses an updated EPA-SWMM solver version 5.1.014.

Further Collaboration with OpenRoads Designer

Enhancements have been made to the hydraulic calculations and reporting when an OpenRoads Designer user is further empowered with a license of OpenFlows StormCAD, SewerCAD, CivilStorm, or SewerGEMS. This includes:

- A 2-row Conduit FlexTable that displays input and results for two scenarios (Only available in OpenRoads Designer)

Enhancements to Change Tracking

The ability to archive change tracking data has been added. This can help with situations where including change tracking data may otherwise increase the size of the model's database file to a great extent.

Enhancements to Crossing Pipes Query

The Crossing Pipes query in Network Navigator has been enhanced to accommodate different types of pipes. If you open the Crossing Pipes query in Network Navigator, you will see options for All Links (which will analyze all pipes and laterals), Current Selection (which will only analyze links already selected in the drawing), Pipes (which will analyze only pipes), and Laterals (which will analyze only laterals).


Improved GIS-ID based ModelBuilder Importing

Improvements have been made to ModelBuilder imports using GIS-ID, which will make creating and updating models based on GIS-ID easier and more successful.

Main Features:
ECU is lightning fast compared to many other astronomy programs and runs very well on older computers that you might use in the field (e.g. older laptops).
ECU is very easy to use. Most operations are performed with the mouse. A "toolbar" is provided for most common functions and for those who prefer to use the keyboard, there are many hot-keys.
The sky can be drawn as either in Sky Atlas (north is up) mode, Local Horizon (up in the local sky is up) mode or with the sky rotated at any arbitrary angle.
It exhibits a colorful display - the colors of all screen elements are controllable by user. Fonts can also be set.
High quality star charts can be printed (in black and white and in full color) which are highly customizable by the user including titles, legend, fonts, and border dimensions. You can also print two charts per page at different zoom levels.
ECU status displays include the local time, universal time, latitude and longitude, RA/DEC, AZ/ALT, field size, magnitude limits, sky darkness, hour angle, sidereal time, and Julian date.
Stars can be drawn in color based on either their spectral type or B-V color index.
Deep sky objects are drawn their correct size, shape, and orientation (when this information is included in the database).
There is advanced control over magnitude limits for all types of objects.
Clicking on an object causes an information box to pop up. All objects provide their RA, DEC, azimuth, altitude, rise and set times, magnitude (if known), air mass, extinction, galactic latitude, and galactic longitude. Other information provided is as follows:
The Sun: distance in AU, kilometers, and light travel time; angular size; solar longitude
The Moon: distance in kilometers; angular size; phase angle; phase age in days; its illuminated fraction in percent
The planets: distance in AU, kilometers, and light travel time; angular size; phase; rates of motion; ecliptic latitude and longitude
Comets and asteroids: distance to the Sun and the Earth in AU, kilometers, and light travel time; solar elongation; phase (for asteroids); rates of motion; ecliptic latitude and longitude
Yale stars: Yale number; HD number; SAO number; Flamsteed/Bayer designation, color (B-V); spectral type; proper motion
SAO stars: SAO number; spectral type
Tycho-2 stars (when information is available): Tycho-2 number, Hipparcos number, HD number, magnitude (B and V), proper motion, and parallax (with error estimate)
Hubble Guide Stars: GSC catalog number; estimated position error; magnitude band; Plate ID
SAC deep sky objects: a varying amount of information, but usually their name (and alternate name); Dreyer description, angular size; position angle; object class; notes
PGC galaxies: the primary and up to four other names; morphological type; angular size; position angle; object class; radial velocity; implied distance in light years
Variable stars: minimum and maximum magnitude; designation; type of variability; period; rising time (or duration of eclipse); time of previous maximum
Double stars: combined magnitude of the pair; discoverer code; DM number; magnitudes of both stars; separation and position angle at up to two dates; spectral type
User objects: user number; text description
The user can display up to 50 images of an object.
The user can add observing notes about any object.
The user can measure angular distances and position angles on the sky with the mouse. Several angular formats are provided.
All user settings can be saved to named configuration files for later retrieval. Comet and asteroid elements can be saved to or loaded from separate ASCII files.
The time can be set as local mean time, UTC, Julian Date, or from the computer's clock (local or UTC). Dates can be entered from 4713BC to 9999AD. For Canada, US and Europe Daylight Saving time can be automatically set.
The observer's location is entered by latitude and longitude or from a list of cities (add your own, too).
Sync your time and/or location using a GPS receiver.
The effects of observer's parallax, nutation, precession, light travel time, aberration, and atmospheric refraction can be individually controlled.
The sky can be displayed as white on black or black on white, or, of course, in full color. Special "night vision" modes protect your night vision when ECU is used in an observatory.
ECU displays the horizon line, custom horizon lines set to match your observing sites, ecliptic line, meridian line, RA/DEC grid (auto scaling), Local Horizon grid (auto scaling), constellation lines, boundary lines, galactic equator line, etc.
Extensive text labels are provided for all types of objects. Text labels can be intelligently placed to avoid overlap.
Several field "targets" of programmable angular size, including rotatable rectangles, can be drawn to represent the field of view of your main telescope and finder scope respectively. You can place up to 100 of these "targets" anywhere on the sky.
The user can center the display at any RA/DEC, AZ/ALT, Hour Angle/DEC, bright star, constellations, Messier object, named deep sky object, point on the horizon (north, south, etc.), or solar system object.
The object databases can also be extensively searched.
Powerful tools to search and filter comet and asteroid elements by brightness, sky position, visibility, Earth distance, etc.
Create detailed reports (that you can import into a spreadsheet or database program such as Excel) of objects plotted on the screen or on printed charts.
ECU's animation mode allows time increments from 1 second to four years. The display can be "locked" to the Sun, Moon, a planet, a comet or asteroid, an AZ/ALT or an RA/DEC. Trails of objects with time labels can be drawn.
A dialog box to display the rise/set times of the Sun and Moon on the current day is provided. It also shows the times of civil, nautical, astronomical twilight, the phase of the Moon, the length of the day and night, and the length of nautical and astronomical darkness.
