Welcome to Building an Automated SQL Server Performance Tuning Engine.

In this course, we are going to build a completely automated application for tuning a SQL Server instance.

The application has been running on live production instances for several years. These SQL Servers have needed no performance tuning attention since the tool was installed.

I've created the software and named it SQL Black Box. I choose the name because for most in the organization the inner workings of the tool will be a black box.

The software in the course will be written in C# and the SQL Server code will obviously be transact-sql.

This is not a step by step on how I authored the code. This course assembles the sundry components that make up the application.

You'll be able to take the application and install it on any SQL Server you want. You won't be able to resale any portion of the code but that's the only restriction.

Regardless of your skill level this application will ease your administrative burden.

Advanced students will be able to choose what modules they want to implement. I use the term module within the software to denote individual unit of work.

For example, there will be a module that removes exact duplicates and there will be a module that adds high impact indexes to the instance.

Please note I used the word instance and not databases. We don't tune databases; we tune the instance they are on because all the critical resources are shared at that level.

Those students newer to SQL Server will be able to change a couple of lines of code, build the modules and then use task scheduler to automated their schedules.

Plain and simple interface
Aesthetically, it's not very impressive, as it sports a simplistic interface and just a few options for downloading videos. This is a simple-to-use tool built specifically with a single goal in mind: to grab video files from YouTube. Therefore, it doesn't come equipped with other noteworthy features, such as a built-in YouTube browser or audio extraction mode.

Straightforward video converter with history mode
Some video details are shown after introducing a YouTube link in the dedicated box, namely the resolution and audio parameters. MassTube supports multiple output formats (FLV, MP4, WebM, 3GP), which means that it gives you the possibility to convert the downloaded files to other types, as well as to select a preferred quality if there are multiple options available.

On task completion, it offers to open the downloaded clips with an external video player. It also integrates a history window that shows all the videos you have downloaded from YouTube, which can be cleared, exported to file, and imported at a later time.

Other program settings
MassTube's window can be placed on top of other frames, and it can be asked to remember the current window position whenever opening a new instance. Basic electrical engineering, basic programming in any high level language

Description

For a student of electrical engineering or for a practicing electrical technician, getting started with simulating electrical circuits can be challenging. Even more so in the case of power electronics where circuits are non-linear. This course introduces the process of simulation and also provides basic theory lectures to help you understand how simulations can be used to learn how power converters work.

This course uses only free and open source software. The course will have lectures to show you how to download and install each software. All software are compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac OS and you can follow this course whatever operating system you prefer to use. The course also has a basic tutorial on Python programming to help you with writing control code for electrical circuits. The course uses the free and open source circuit simulator Python Power Electronics. You can use other simulators if you are already using them. However, all examples in this course will use Python Power Electronics as I would like all students registered for the course to be able to access a circuit simulator and not all simulators are free to use.

This course is not a comprehensive course on power electronics. I will not be covering a vast number of power converters. Instead, this course focuses on depth. The lectures will have code along sessions where I will be building simulations from scratch and will be switching back and forth between theory presentations and simulation results to understand how circuits work. The course will not be heavily mathematical but on the contrary will use fundamental concepts of Physics to understand how power converter circuits.

In order to successfully complete this course, a student is required to have some basic electrical knowledge. This implies basic network laws - Kirchoff's Voltage Law, Kirchoff's Current Law, Ohm's Law. These would be taught in first year of electrical engineering. Other than that, you do not need to have prior knowledge of power electronics or analog electronics. A student will also be required to have some basic knowledge of programming. This course uses Python. However, if a student has used any other high level language such as C, C++, Java etc, that would do as well. Expert knowledge of programming is not necessary. This course however, should not be a student's very first time coding.
